How will we go on?

Reading DU today, well actually the last couple weeks. I have learned that we are going to lose the house and the senate in 22 and the presidency in 24. We will be rounded up by the military and locked up in camps or possibly outright executed. I have read posts that we need to disregard the election results if we lose. That perhaps we need to go on the offensive now… I don’t even want to guess what is meant by that.

And all of this hyper doom is echoed and heightened by following replies that turn up the fear. Push the edge a little further. We are all sitting on our phones or computers, likely secure and safe and warm and most of us likely fed, mostly pretty comfortable, fuck some of you are probably sitting at a damned starbucks enjoying a triple extra shot caramel grande fuckety fuck preaching about the end of the world. Sluuuurrrrrrrrp. Make sure to use your straw to get that last bit of warm whipping cream from the bottom of your cup.

Damn man. Is that all we have in us? To guve the fuck up if republicans do the shit that republicans have been doing for-fucking-ever? Even if all of that shit comes to pass… What yer going to go belly up and let that shit happen? You think the majority of the country is just going to roll the fuck over and accept it? I get it that we need to take shit seriously but if shit goes sideways are you really goibg to just give up?

ENOUGH with the doom fantasies people!

1. 2016, two Washington Post writers traveled the country to gauge the mood of Americans:

"For every disgruntled person out there who felt undone by the system and threatened by the way the culture was changing, caught in the bind of stagnant wages or longing for an America of the past, we found someone who had endured decades of discrimination and hardship and yet still felt optimistic about the future and had no desire to go back. In this season of discontent, there were still as many expressions of hope as of fear. On a larger level, there were as many communities enjoying a sense of revival as there were fighting against deterioration and despair."

The U.S. is a very large, diverse country and the minority Republican nuts will not win in the end. The country is not an oligarchy and corporations still need customers, the military is not behind Trump. What happened to speaking truth to power, fighting, passion, revolution? Only exciting when not used against the real danger, Republicans?

3. Everyone has to have some worst case scenario

Mine is that if a civil war broke out, we'll win because history has shown that fascist regimes die. The GQP Reich and whatever strange confederacy that might emerge can go out in a dying whimper of...Trump won...*dies*

4. Thank for this post.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

I can't tell you many freaking "WE ARE ALL DOOMED EVERYTHING IS FUCKED NOTHING GOOD IS EVER GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN THE SKY IS FALLING WOE IS MEEEEE" posts I've read today (and I probably don't need to, because it sounds like you've read them, too ). And I am just SO sick of it.

I agree with you 1000%: enough gloom and doom already, people!

Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone in this!

5. Interestingly, Freepers do the same thing. The hyper-doom.

According to them, all is lost. The country cannot be saved. The America they once knew and loved has been taken over by commies, gays, globalists', illegals, et al.. Dems will steal the 2022 and 2024 elections just like they did in 2020 and other elections. They will be rounded up and executed.

It's interesting how similar the comments are in tone and substance and by changing a couple of words, the same post can be made in either site.

12. Yes!

And the same arguments and accusations get made.

My worry is that we are falling for the same things they fall for.

All those who don't agree are viewed as members of the opposite extreme.

7. Sadly, drama is the only reason some people get involved.

Some throw rocks, others jump up and cry "Alas, all is lost!" at every corner turned.
And lord knows, dim donnie brought the drama.

8. We misgauged tRump in 2016. Worrying about winning 2022 & 24 is legitimate

tRump is not the only threat.

There are many avenues for RepubliCons to take power in 22 and 24 and some of them involve trickery certifying elections and others involve violence and intimidation.

I think much discussion is to shake people out of complacency, to get them out of feeling that with Biden and a caramel grande that everything is on autopilot.

9. +1000

I don't think what people are predicting is just "doom and gloom". I agree with you that these concerns are legitimate and that is mostly because the republicans are cheating like hell and determined to win at all costs. We are playing by the rules and they aren't and haven't been for a very long time now. When are we going to wake up to that fact?

They will win because they will cheat. Will it be legitimate? No. But will they be in "power?" Probably. Will it be a nightmare? Yes.

In the words of Bruno Mars in Uptown Funk, "Don't believe me just watch..."

11. I wonder if the Germans and the non-Vichy French felt the same way

But hey, even then, it was just half a decade or so of hell, with death camps and Blitzkriegs, and beach landings, and death and destruction across the globe, but yeah! We got through it.

Maybe the hope is that people will get motivated enough to enable us to skip all that.

13. It won't

And don’t you understand the irony of comparing to Nazi Germany? The messages here aren’t calling to rally and fight and do everything you can. I am talking about the ones saying that we have already lost. It’s over. And it is largely our own party’s fault. Not the fault of the people committing the acts. I am not saying that bad things can’t happen. But that we excuse the people that would do these bad acts because we expect it and blame purselves for not doing more or in some cases even do something illegal to prevent it.

18. Actually, I think today's Retrumplican Party is more like Vichy France

Marshall Philippe Petain was granted dictatorial powers by the French Assembly shortly after signing the Armistice with Germany.

Here's a good description of Petain. Remind you of anyone?

In his speeches, Pétain always used the personal pronoun je, portrayed himself as a Christ-like figure sacrificing himself for France and assuming a God-like tone of a semi-omniscient narrator who knew truths about the world that the rest of the French did not. To justify the Vichy ideology of the Révolution nationale ("national revolution", Pétain needed a radical break with the Republic. During his radio speeches, the entire French Third Republic era was always painted in the blackest of colours as a time of décadence when the French people were alleged to have suffered moral degeneration and decline.

Summarising Pétain's speeches, the British historian Christopher Flood wrote that Pétain blamed la décadence on "political and economic liberalism, with its divisive, individualistic and hedonistic values—locked in sterile rivalry with its antithetical outgrowths, Socialism and Communism". Pétain argued that rescuing the French people from décadence required a period of authoritarian government that would restore national unity and the traditionalist morality, which Pétain claimed the French had forgotten. Despite his highly-negative view of the Third Republic, Pétain argued that la France profonde ("deep France", denoting profoundly French aspects of French culture) still existed, and that the French people needed to return to what Pétain insisted was their true identity. Alongside this claim for a moral revolution was Pétain's call for France to turn inwards and to withdraw from the world, which Pétain always portrayed as a hostile and threatening place full of endless dangers for the French.

Pointing out historical parallels and warnings of what's to come is NOT giving up, or surrendering, or complaining that there is nothing to be done. Rather, it is a way to highlight just how dangerously close to the precipice we are.

Once they remove the very tools that can be used to fight back, or pull us back from the abyss, it's too late.

I'm sorry, but we have...maybe...ONE election left to put a stop to their nefarious plans. That's it. One election to save our Democracy the easy way. Or, a long and hard slog through despotism, just to get back to where we are now.

It's not defeatists to appraise our situation. It's realism.

15. I visited my wife's family in Seattle last week.

All of them are liberals.

None of them are obsessing about the impending doom of fascism.

PERHAPS BECAUSE none of them spend endless hours digesting political cable news and blog posts.

Perhaps some folks should put away their computers and TV remotes and spend a little more time living a normal life.

Like a contagion. And it's exactly what the right wants from us.
