Romney WOULD be given a pass IF he was protesting war as a missionary

Romney took to his own form of protest that spring day. Sporting khakis and a blazer, he joined a counter-demonstration seeking to restore order on the traditionally buttoned-down Stanford campus. His message, spelled out on a picket sign, was “Speak out, don’t sit in.”

Promoting the Vietnam war and cheering it on, as Mitt Romney clearly did, wasn't 'service' like we understand conscientious objectors to represent. besides, plenty of religious disciples and clergy WENT to Vietnam and served alongside of the troops. Romney in France was a convenient dodge of that service, with the worst of intentions for that bloody conflict. It's despicable, really, to hear his wife defend that convenient exodus of his from America as 'service,' akin to what U.S. troops endured during his time as a missionary in France.

and getting CO status was nearly impossible. They were literally drafting my classmates before they graduated HS. You didn't get an exemption unless you had someone intervening for you.

From Wikipedia: "In the United States, there are two main criteria for classification as a conscientious objector. First, the objector must be opposed to war in any form, Gillette v. United States, 401 U.S. 437. "
