More Americans died of COVID this year than all of 2020

The United States has been facing a COVID-19 surge as the more contagious delta variant continues to spread.

More than 707,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 while over 4.8 million people have died from the disease worldwide, according to real-time data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

Just 65.7% of Americans ages 12 and up are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to data from the CDC

And still 3 months to go… What a grim statistic.

1. No surprise, unfortunately.

Shall we have grim pool to guess how many will die in 2022?

A lot depends on both how many succumb to the Delta variant, and if another variant shows up which infects the already vaccinated or those who'd already had an earlier version of the disease, and has a higher mortality rate. Normally, diseases evolve in the direction of less lethality, but I would not bet on that with this one.

Keep in mind, that at this point, as terrible as this is, it's not even remotely killing off enough people to affect total population numbers.
