I keep hearing the Republicans going on and on about how Saint Ronnie would do it like this or if only things would be done Reagan's way....everything would be solved. Even the Democrats seem afraid to say ANYTHING contradictory of Reagan....as if he is somehow untouchable!
This seems so ridiculous to me. I remember when he was President and the first time he came to Canada...I forget what the circumstances were, but I remember somehow the subject of acid rain came up....and Reagan, in all his wisdom, THOUGHT ACID RAIN WAS CAUSED BY THE TREES!....We all had a good laugh over that one.
He is also credited with stopping the cold war with the Soviet Union. As I remember it the Russians themselves came to realize communism was not working for them. I remember Gorbachev coming to Canada around that time and touring around the country observing how democracy works.
Ronald Reagan's claim to fame is that he was a genial old man...period.
Hope you don't mind me saying this.

(20,600 posts)You are right, he has become deified in America.
I'm sure statues of him in parks will be the norm if they aren't already and I just have missed them.
What a commentary on America.

(5,261 posts)...of course, that's not saying much. What I don't understand is how today's right says they love him so much when actually, if Reagan were around today they wouldn't like him anymore than they do Romney.

It's why conservatives, like Reagan and gw bush, for example, always fail at governing.
It would be hilarious if it wasn't so deadly.

(33,497 posts)We had FDR and the GOP had nobody so they, along with the media, went out of their way to build up the legend that Reagan was a great president who brought down the Soviet Union single handedly.

(111,052 posts)A lot of people have been fooled by the Reagan bullshit.
The national debt was less than 1 trillion dollars when he took office. After the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Vietnam War, the New Deal, the Great Society, and Jimmy Carter, the debt was less than $1 trillion dollars. He quadrupled it and it has not slowed down since because the stupid politicians have followed Reaganomics over the cliff.
All I can offer you is the truth. Do with it what you will.

They have to go back to Eisenhower to find a decent republican and he was a socialist (by today's standards) preceded by Hoover.
Of course they have to glorify the only modern republican president who has any credibility.
