Mexican Supreme Court decriminalizes abortion in historic shift

https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/mexico-supreme-court-rules-criminalizing-abortion-is-unconstitutional-2021-09-07/

MEXICO CITY, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Mexico's Supreme Court unanimously ruled on Tuesday that penalizing abortion is unconstitutional, a major victory for advocates of women's health and human rights, just as parts of the United States enact tougher laws against the practice.

The court ruling in the majority Roman Catholic nation follows moves to decriminalize abortion at state level, although most of the country still has tough laws in place against women terminating their pregnancy early. "This is a historic step for the rights of women," said Supreme Court Justice Luis Maria Aguilar.

A number of U.S. states have recently taken steps to restrict women's access to abortion, particularly Texas, which last week enacted the strictest anti-abortion law in the country after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to intervene. read more

The Mexican ruling opens the door to the possibility for the release of women incarcerated for having had abortions. It could also lead to U.S. women in states such as Texas deciding to travel south of the border to terminate their pregnancies. In July, the state of Veracruz became just the fourth of Mexico's 32 regions to decriminalize abortion.

I think it's safe to say that Mexico cares more about Mexicans than the USA cares about Americans.

The Louisiana territory back to France, Florida and Puerto Rico back to Spain, and all the rest back to the United Kingdom.
It would be a major improvement.

And religious groups have been fighting for the power to impose their beliefs on the whole country for generations now. I know this likely will not happen, but I see only two actions that would help us reclaim our democracy.

1. Immediately nominate four justices to expand the Supreme Court and ram them through Congress exactly the same way the Republicans rammed Kavanaugh and Barrett through. Preferably, this should happen before the Court starts hearing the Mississippi case.
2. Immediately vote to make DC and Puerto Rico states. I say immediately because they would need time to set up state government and create the mechanism for federal elections. If DC and Puerto Rico were solidly Republican, they would have been states years ago.

I have no doubt whatsoever that if the situations were reversed, McConnell and Republicans would do this. Republicans are ruthless about doing anything and everything needed to add to and protect their power and they never pay any consequences. Why are Democrats so timid? We can accomplish a lot without resorting to the lies that Republicans use, but our elected representatives need to be willing to use their power—and so far they are unwilling.
