So we went to Asheville today.

Last edited Sun Aug 22, 2021, 10:02 AM - Edit history (1)

We were celebrating an occasion and just wanted to walk around, look at some art, get something to eat outside.

Turns out that they have a city-wide mask mandate, vaccinated or not. Most of the people we saw were masked unless they were sitting down eating. Most of the stores have a box of masks at the entrance with signs saying not to come in if you don't have a mask on.

Well, we went into this one jewelry store. I don't care for the jewelry, but there's a cat who's quite cute and friendly. The owner, artist, whatever she calls herself wasn't masked. We petted the cat for a minute and then my husband said, "I assume you're vaccinated, then?" She snarled, "That's personal health information!" and turned around in a huff, never to speak to us again. We did say goodbye when we left and she didn't reply.

But now I'm mad at myself for not saying, "No, that's actually public health information because we're in a pandemic. Your vaccination status combined with your refusal to wear a mask will likely affect people you don't even know. If you gave a flying fuck, you'd at least be covering your unvaccinated mouth to protect your potential customers, as is currently required." Alas, I'm just not quick on my feet.

It sort of put me in a mood, particularly since we go to Asheville to escape the ignorance we live among. For the most part, it's quite progressive. But this was a big slap in the face for me.

I'm sorely tempted to write a scathing review on Yelp because of her lack of respect for the local laws, as well as her lack of concern for her fellow human beings... not to mention that her stuff is overpriced and nothing special, and she's a rude bitch whose beautiful cat deserves a better mom.

So that's my rant. Hold me.

UPDATE: OK, I did it! I wrote my Yelp review. I hope it protects someone. Thanks for all your replies and support! You helped me do the right thing!

2. You should write a review.

Asheville is a wonderful town and I’m sorry to hear you had that experience.

As far as everything being overpriced lol, I lived in that area back in the 70s. It’s changed. It’s “cool” and “trendy”. Back then, it actually was cool.

34. I was there in '85-

and you are correct; that is when Asheville was truly "cool." Now it is just bullshit trendy. The true creatives have been replaced by consumers, and much of the town reminds me of an extension of South Charlotte.

I despise what Asheville has become.

As is my area.

lives there now... but they do have Madison Cawthorn for their Rep.. Hope that can change.

And, the city wide Mask mandate sounds Blue.. but there's brainwashed faux viewers everywhere.

Asheville is very liberal. But, they’re not large enough to counteract all the prepper types and anarchists who live in the rest of the district. NC-11 covers 16 counties.

One small blue dot. Thick with stupid outside Asheville. These idiots gave you Meadows and Cawthorn. They are patriotic heroes to them. Asheville is cool, pricey, but the stupid seeps in from outside the city. When fall colors come, the city will be Thick with Floridiots bringing their DeSatan disease here. Not all that think they are Artists is Asheville are. Some scam Tourists with foreign junk.

38. Not really

The district is in the SW corner of the state. It HAD been gerrymandered when they yanked Asheville out and put it with the 10th district, but it was put back into the 11th before MadCaw’s election. MadCaw won his election 55 - 42, so it wasn’t a blowout. The Trumpers came out of the woodwork in 2020, but a lot of them probably won’t vote without Trump on the ballot.

30. It Is, But...

You have to remember some "liberals" are also anti-vaxxers, and there's a decent sized anti-vaxxer crowd up there. In fact, there was a measles outbreak up there, just two years ago, and a chickenpox outbreak at a private school there, almost three years ago.

So, add in all the Faux Nuz consuming crowd from the "red" areas around Asheville with the anti-vaxxers and you're primed for a mega disaster with COVID.

All that's before we take into consideration the fact that the county's hospital was recently taken over by a for-profit hospital chain (Hospital Corporation of America, or HCA), which has basically gutted it in a short amount of time...

43. Yeah, unfortunately

I have been dismayed to find that there are a number of “progressive” anti-vaxers here. It’s maddening and sad.
And as you point out, we’re surrounded by lots of MAGA types. It’s not the best of times here.
Artist and musicians have been hit hard and the rents are unaffordable.

5. Asheville is a beautiful city.

I love visiting there, and most of the people are super cool — although there is an idiot quotient just like anywhere else (and as you know, the city is surrounded by some bonehead areas).

Sorry you had a bad experience — who would expect an artist’s shop to be a danger zone?!

Sounds like it was a good time to head up to the Blue Ridge Parkway for some mountain bathing.

10. It's every sane person's frustration.

No one can make absolute safe health choices, individually. We count on the vast majority to follow the science and logic. Doing this, we could have put this behind us, to a large degree, 3 months ago. But, no, a not insignificant group of people - with Party political cover - act to hurt the public health. When do we start charging them with the growing pile of corpses of people who thought they were telling the truth?

And I am so fed up with these anti maskers!

Today I had to go get parts for my diesel Ag well and I go inside the parts store- our county has an indoor mask mandate, but this is one of the conservative towns in the county- and nobody working there was wearing masks! And I had to wait for the filters and other parts. And pay. It took forever!!!!!!

I went outside for some of the time, but, oh my goodness, am I ever sick of having to deal with part replacement under these circumstances.

I will notify my county and see if they do anything. I doubt that they will. Even the sheriffs never wear masks!

I wore two masks, and am of course vaccinated. But I am at the 6 month mark now where it’s effectiveness supposedly begins to wane.

21. you should absolutely write a review that the business is not pro-vaxx and mask

It is not safe for others to be there and Google and Yelp will have your back. Common sense is not ranting!

She has no business having a filthy uncovered, unvaxxed face and then having the audacity to endanger you. What she is doing is dangerous and the business should be shut down.

Btw for the most part Asheville is very pro mask, pro vax, pro science and will have your back.

It is of no surprise to me that those who cloak themselves in patriotism, service are devoid of both. Fuck them' scream it on the local paper, nextdoor app, and walk back in there and reprise the moment and your thoughts. You could actually save a life if you can safely let her know there is something beyond her info bubble.

40. What's the name of the business?

Flying to Charlotte and heading to Asheville to visit a friend and maybe spend some time there before I head on up on my way up to Virginia. Though, plans are in flux, may visit on the back end depending on a couple of other factors.

I'll be double masked on the flight, with sterile gloves. I think going ahead on the yelp would be very useful to those who do give a damn and agree that this is obviously a matter of public health.

Thanks for sharing.

Have a safe trip! I've never written a Yelp review before, so I'm a little intimidated. I thought about Tripadvisor, too. Still need to screw up my courage.

not every economically privileged person thinks this way or behaves this way, but so many do.
