(23,156 posts)is the underlying assumption that there's something normal and perfectly okay about being at work until 7 or 8pm. Never mind kids at home. Or who needs to be cooking dinner. Think about the belief that work is absolutely more important than anything else. There is something so very wrong with that.
Even if we lived in a society where: everyone is heterosexual, everyone marries and has a couple of kids (maybe more, I'm not going to be the Reproductive Police here), the wives willingly and happily stay home to manage kids and household -- even in that world there is something very wrong with the breadwinner being expected to work 60 or more hours per week. THAT'S why our culture is so fucked up.
Of course, in the real world we all live in there are gay men and women, single moms and dads, those who never marry, or who marry but never have children. Or, even if you're a happy heterosexual couple with kids, those kids are only home with you for a limited number of years, and then with any luck at all they grow up, move out, have their own lives. Society, at least not in a modern industrialized nation, is not remotely monolithic.
Unfortunately, Mitt Romney, because of his religion and social privilege, does himself live in a monolithic culture, and simply does not get it that others don't inhabit his little world.

I dunno. As a working woman and retired single mother, I just can't make up my mind about which of them to vote for.
