George Will Said Last Night that this Was the Best Debate He's Ever Seen

I watched the debate on PBS and saw some of the comments from Mark Shields and David Brooks. Both men said Obama won. I switched over to ABC for a bit and George Will gave Obama a "tactical" win. Will said that he'd seen every debate since 1960 and he said that the one last night was the best ever.

I started getting interested in politics during the Reagan era. I've seen most of the debates since 1984, and I think I agree with Will. I can't think of a better, more substantive debate in all these years. However, I'm not sure if I'm prejudiced because Obama did such a good job. Also, I've never felt so personally affected by the outcome of an election, so I have to factor that in as well. Do you think the debate last night was the best in your lifetime?

Real questions and real debate. There were a few lame questions but even those produced good debate.

made the most of the questions they were asked. I thought the last question was the lamest, when the man asked how Obama and Romney were different from the way they have been portrayed by the campaigns. That was just an opportunity for both men to puff themselves up, especially Romney. But I think everyone came away with a clear perception of what to expect from each man if he's elected. There's no excuse for anyone to be undecided anymore.

mean the end to crime. What about the Menendez Brothers?

Growing up with two parents who fight constantly and who abuse each other or one the other is not good for children. Romney does not know what he is talking about.

It sounds like some of the shit that comes out of his mouth on the ABC Sunday show. Will doesn't say much that's worthy of being repeated, but you know what they say about broken clocks and all.

It's just that it's so rare for him to say anything I agree with. I wanted to see what other DUers thought about it.

I think I've seen him slaughter opponents just as well.

But I think Obama's performance last night will likely be one that goes down in the history books, I really do. I don't say things like that lightly.

He quipped cleverly, he found his backbone, he called Mitt out, he defended several aspects of American liberal thought - in contrast to Kerry or Gore who were very milquetoast, Obama just gave us an A+ debate.

Looking back on it, I can't think of a thing that Obama should have done differently. Maybe it was a simple matter of preparation; I don't know. The Pres. seemed to be pre-occupied in the first debate, but I saw on the news beforehand that Obama had spent a lot of time preparing for this one. It was a thing of beauty.

. . . for George is the one ringing the bell.

Man, oh man, if George Will thinks that President Obama clobbered Mitt this bad, then it is all over, but for the counting of the votes.

It was a pretty intense debate, to be sure.
At one point I thought that President Obama was going to lean in and take a swipe at Mitt with a left jab while Mitt was walking over to him as he talked, trying to intimidate the President with each step.
Mitt was so freaking rude by jumping all over President Obama's lines all night, that I was half-hoping that President Obama would do something like that.
