Sea Snot in Turkey

Divers who have seen the phenomenon firsthand describe many types of underwater sea snot. There are the “stringers,” which most resemble the sticky goo that might actually come out of your nose. But there are also floating “clouds,” white and ethereal, so delicate that they break apart in your fingers. Then there are the tiny flakes of “marine snow,” which begin as drops of mucus and accumulate organic debris as they drift slowly, slowly down to the bottom of the sea.

Then there is whatever is happening off the coast of Turkey—a downright “mucilage calamity,” in the words of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoǧan. The sea snot there has surfaced and turned monstrous, gelling into a thick layer of yellowing slime atop the water. For months, this foul mucus has blanketed the Sea of Marmara, which connects the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea in the Mediterranean. It’s smothering shellfish, clogging nets, and destroying the fishing industry.

The slime is, in short, a national crisis. Turkey is now trying to vacuum up its embarrassment of sea snot, dispatching workers with hoses to collect mucus by the tons for incineration. But scientists say that much more is probably lurking under the water. And even worse, the floating mucus is a sign of much larger disruptions in the sea. As unsightly as sea snot might be, its most devastating effects happen far away from human eyes, deep below the surface.

2. This is another environmental disaster

I watched a report on this about two weeks ago. The so-called 'sea snot' is not only disgusting to look at and smell but environmentally disastrous to the region. It is smothering everything that lives beneath the water.

Another alarm and warning on the fate of the planet if we don't get our act together on Climate Change and environmental degradation.

We're destroying the only home we have.

4. It would be best if we were all to disappear...

I happen to agree/sympathize with the character “Rustin” from the series “True Detective”…a truly nihilistic but realistic outlook:

I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in human evolution. We became too self aware; nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself. We are creatures that should not exist by natural law. We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self, a secretion of sensory experience and feeling, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact everybody’s nobody. I think the honorable thing for our species to do is deny our programming, stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction, one last midnight, brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal.

6. LOL. I wouldn't go that far.

But, I have to say if we don't get on the ball, we and certainly our children and grand children will be zooming towards 'that one last midnight' whether we like it or not.

5. ...soon to be bottled and marketed as "Dr. Trump's Magic Healing Salve".

And the MAGAts would buy it, too.

7. Latest bumper sticker in Turkey: "Stop the Snot".

So they turn around and incinerate the damn stuff, which exasperates the problem by assisting global warming.

... .......

Brilliant, humings!........
