LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

Better than Biden.

Better than Biden.

Strong, lethally articulate, connected with the audience, and every inch the Commander in Chief. Called a liar an liar, had his facts straight, hit all the high points (47%!!!), slashed his opponent on a dozen occasions, was poised and patient...

...and let Romney stagger and bluster himself into one of the most embarrassing moments I have ever seen in my life.

"He did say that, Governor."

Wham and splatter.

Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States.

Major points scored by Obama-

Unused oil and gas leases- exposed that talking point.

Romney's story about recruiting women for his cabinet came across as meeting an affirmative action goal so that he would look good. The punch line was that somebody in NY called his administration the most diverse in the nation. Obama countered with Romney campaign's lack of support for Lilly Ledbetter.

Obama got Romney talking about self-deportation in the condescending fashion that he reserves for all people who happen not to be rich white males.

Libya- "he did say that..."- knockdown.

Assault weapons ban- he was for it before he was against it. Another knockdown- Romney needs every last gun-clutcher to even be competitive.

Just before the final bell, Romney stuck his chin out by saying that the misconception people have about him is that he doesn't care about 100% of the people. Obama knocked that out of the park by reminding everyone of Romney's videotaped remarks about the 47% who see themselves as victims and refuse to take responsibility...

Obama also got a couple Joe-Biden-toothy-grin points in this match. Not that he needed them.

Look at the polls. TPM is the best and must trustworthy aggregator. I'm convinced now Obama will make up the lost ground. But there's no point pretending no ground was lost. Obama's performance was just a notch above Pawlentish. Thankfully he pulled it all back together last night. The results won't show up in the polls for another 7-10 days, but he really did stop the bleeding. (So did Biden!)

Did Romney get a bump? Yes he did but guess what - not enough to give him more electoral votes than Obama. If the elections were held today Obama would STILL win.

Guess what, we have 4 more weeks and that first debate will be farther and farther away. We shouldn't still be bitching and moaning about the first debate we should be talking about the great points made in the previous debate.

Remember the slogan that Obama uses - FORWARD

Try doing that! If we are to win we are to go FORWARD not keep looking backwards.

If anything I think the 2 debates Obama played it brilliantly. He got Romney in a comfort zone where when the same questions were pretty much asked from the last debate Romney thought he could get away with using the same exact lies. This time when Obama called him on it Romney fell to pieces. Going into the last debate which is foreign policy, Mitt will struggle because all he can do is try to blast Obama's record and look what happened with that moment with Libya.

No one likes bad news. I get that. What I don't get is people thinking that chastising the news bearer will somehow make the news better. You didn't see Obama spending the week after the debate denying that he did badly. No, he frankly admitted the fault was his and set about preparing to do a better job the next time. Facing bad news square on has been the hallmark of progressivism going back to the first muckrakers. Denying the bad news right in our faces is a trope of conservatism. I like it here on the pro-fact side of that conflict, even if that means sometimes I don't like the view.

At a minimum, if Mr. Obama loses this thing, it won't be because of that first debate. Not anymore.
