Mayor de Blasio explains failure to make Juneteenth an official NYC holiday
Mayor de Blasio tried Friday to explain his failure to make Juneteenth an official city holiday, a day after it was revealed he wouldnt make good on the promise he made last year. De Blasio vowed last June that the city would make it a holiday but on Friday he said the city still has to hammer out plans ... He noted that the holiday would cost the city $150 million in direct and indirect costs.
I said we want to do this, but we have to negotiate the specifics, he said Friday on WNYC. It will be a school holiday, unquestionably. Weve got more work to do to bring the other pieces together. I think well get there.
As it stands now, city workers can take June 19th off, but to do so theyd have to use already accrued days off instead of getting a paid holiday set aside for Juneteenth.
