Mayor de Blasio explains failure to make Juneteenth an official NYC holiday

Mayor de Blasio tried Friday to explain his failure to make Juneteenth an official city holiday, a day after it was revealed he wouldn’t make good on the promise he made last year. De Blasio vowed last June that the city would make it a holiday but on Friday he said the city still has to hammer out plans ... He noted that the holiday would cost the city $150 million in “direct and indirect costs.”

“I said we want to do this, but we have to negotiate the specifics,” he said Friday on WNYC. “It will be a school holiday, unquestionably. We’ve got more work to do to bring the other pieces together. I think we’ll get there.”

As it stands now, city workers can take June 19th off, but to do so they’d have to use already accrued days off instead of getting a paid holiday set aside for Juneteenth.
