Let me start by saying My Dad and Step Mother are fully vaccinated. He normally lives in Las Vegas but Step Mom has a family farm in Missouri that they go to a couple times a year.
They happen to be at the Farm and Dad isn't feeling good. They go to an urgent care Dad supposedly get tested and test positive for covid. So what does my "Brilliant" Step mom do takes him back to state farm and start treating him with Over the Counter meds. I find out he is sick on my birthday. She calls to wish me a happy birthday and tells me that Dad tested positive for covid and his pulse Oxygen was 87. I freak I tell her she needs to call an ambulance or get him to the hospital. she goes off on a tangent that last time Dad was sick (non covid issue) she said she thought the EMTs wanted to take my Dad to the Hospital 100 miles a way so they can drive past Lake of the Ozarks to see the girls in bikinis.
I get her focus on my Dad again and she insists she monitoring him thru the night. I hang up with her and text my Sister-in-law my fears and concerns. She and my brother are as worried as I am and have gone rounds Yesterday sister in law(my brother's wife) test me that Dad is in the hospital on Oxygen. Talk to Dad briefly he could barely talk or think.
So please be careful out there Yes the vaccine prevents worse illness or death and yes my Dad is in his 80s with pre-existing conditions but that doesn't mean you still can't get it. The delta/India variant is spreading faster.
I worry we are opening up too soon not enough people vaccinated and a good chance of even more dangerous variant
Be Careful.

(10,269 posts)The Delta is going to burn through the unvaccinated population just as badly as the original, pre-vaccine.
Were going to pretend to have a normal July 4th and labor day, and then sept/October were going to see another nationwide spike. Kids are NOT going to be in classrooms for spring semester. That's my prediction. We have Freedom of Speech, which means Fox News is allowed to exist.
But there ARE consequences. That Freedom, IS NOT free.

(21,424 posts)At that rate of spread, I don't think schools will even be able to open in the fall. By August, we should be seeing huge spikes in some regions. More children are getting infected now. Children under 12 are not getting vaccinated. The number of breakthrough infections increases with delta, especially among older people.
As delta takes over the country as the main variant, the safest people will be younger, healthy ones between 20 and 40 who have been vaccinated. Most at risk will be people of any age who have not been vaccinated, including children. After that, even vaccinated health care workers will be at risk due to constant exposure.
EDIT TO ADD: The latest number for the delta variant in NY state is 17% of all new infections. By July 4th, that number will be over 34%. By the end of July it will be more than 68%. By the end of August, when schools plan to open, we should be having lockdowns in some places.

(1,495 posts)people. About 20% of the breakthrough cases were asymptomatic. I will be still taking precautions and wearing a mask.

(1,495 posts)Here is the exact wording on their press release:
"The ECDOH Office of Epidemiology reviewed these fully vaccinated individuals case records for reported COVID-19 symptoms. Of these fully vaccinated individuals, 65% were symptomatic, 21% were asymptomatic and 14% either declined to answer or were not reached for an interview. Further, approximately 50% reported underlying medical conditions."
Still that's not good.

(4,999 posts)Vaccine efficiacy is based on preventing serious illness, not preventing all symptoms.
So of course some vaccinated folks were symptomatic, that's why they felt like they needed to be tested.
Question still remains, of the total vaccinated population, what percent feel like they should be tested? And how many get serious illness?
I don't think you can say "good" or "bad" until those additional bits of information are known.
It is still prudent to wear a mask, particularly indoors.

(21,424 posts)even mild and asymptomatic cases can cause organ damage.

(21,424 posts)the percentage of asymptomatic people with organ damage. I only know that it has been reported to happen. In fact, as I type this, I am listening to a radio discussion with a doctor about the effects of covid that just mentioned cell and organ damage in asymptomatic cases. No percentage figures given.
EDIT: The doctor on the program is a virologist at the Mayo Clinic. Did not catch his name.

(1,379 posts)These #s dont mean much because unless you have mandated testing, very few people are getting tested.

(21,786 posts)if she thinks that EMTs want to take your father to the hospital so they can drive by a lake with girls in bikinis. That is not something a normal person with a functional brain thinks.

(1,114 posts)a racist and well your typical Karen (sorry to us that term but it fits her) She thinks she knows everything and demands to be the center of attention. She has been known to demand Cashiers to bag her groceries and take them to her car and load them in her trunk because that is the way it was done when she was a child and people don't show that respect any more.

(32,620 posts)It's not always necessary to call EMTs if someone in your family is a reliable driver. Even a friend or neighbor. Best of luck to your Dad. This is something that needs to be dealt with immediately.

I've been alerting others on breakthrough cases not being as "rare" as reported, but no one wants to believe me..... sort of like when this began and I was mocked.

(2,541 posts)The vaccine ? immunity. I have been vaccinated both shots but I still wear my mask and take the same precautions as before.
I agree that we are in such a rush to open up that we are doing it too fast. We dont know enough about the variants that are presenting now and because of the lack of compassion magas/republicans have for all others there are still millions of vectors for the variants to exploit and negate all the progress made since Jan.
