Why arent any anti-mask protesters upset with the new energy requirements? How many people do they actually feel will abide by this mandate?

(17,526 posts)It is much easier to breathe in the cool temp and low humidity. Our house is well insulated and the AC unit is very efficient, so the cost is not outrageous.
We are into the dog days of summer in the Deep South, I just checked, on the front porch it is 90 degrees F. and 75 percent humidity. A Thunder storm is brewing, It would be hot if it weren't cloudy. That is as rough as a cob on old folks.

(2,779 posts)Hot and humid here in Wilmington, NC. Boyfriend likes to keep it cool, and I get cold easily so we compromise and keep it at 72 pretty much year round. Our apartment complex is new, only opened a few months before we moved in last year, so it's well insulated. When we lost power last year due to Isaias, it stayed relatively cool for most of the day.

(15,184 posts)...I'd find that way too hot for comfort. Even with dry air, 78° is up there a bit for me.

(2,095 posts)We keep ours at 75, even when humidity is only 10% (dew point of 21F). And we actually run a humidifier in the summer so we dont dry out too badly. It will be a mild 112 at my house today.

(1,495 posts)I'm always hot. I would die if I had to keep it at 78 degrees. Luckily, I don't live in Texas.

(7,853 posts)I hate it hot as well and -- in addition to our house's standard HVAC system -- I had a window A/C installed a couple of years ago because in the summer, the HVAC system couldn't keep the whole house cool at 70 and it would instead creep up to 72 or higher at times in the afternoon, when the sun beats down badly on one side of our house. Life has been MUCH more comfortable since getting the window A/C to compliment the whole house HVAC unit.
One of life's simple pleasures is whenever I have to spend time in a hotel, I crank the A/C really down to like 64 or 66. I don't even think my window A/C goes below 66, and even if it could, at 66 it would probably run constantly since it won't be able to keep the bedroom that cool with these super hot, super humid summer days we have here.

(14,047 posts)Occasionally I will nudge it down to 79. But the cliche is true - it is a dry heat.

(3,401 posts)I understand the issue, 78degree setting is much more comfortable than 93 and no electricity. But the thermostat request doesnt work if only a few follow it.
Just as the mask doesnt help a society reach immunity unless everyone follows the guidelines.
Still neither issue compares to the Nazi party or are they treating their citizens as Jewish Holocaust prisoners. Both are for the safety of everyone.

(4,189 posts)There are still plenty of masks in our area.

(1,789 posts)because the "regulation" to winterize power plants was optional. If it had been a real regulation, it would have been a hell of a lot more enforceable than this 78 degree thing in everyone's homes and businesses. I get the concept, but good luck with that.

(2,347 posts)We keep it around there in the cardiac cath lab and OR (due to the equipment), year round, and I have to wear long sleeves, even in the summer.

(7,853 posts)Back when I went to Texas for school, my roommate had it set to like 78 to 84 or something crazy like that and even he was sweating, just sitting in his damn apartment. Hell no. I remember the days when 68 was the typical "room temperature" and I've even relented and given up a few degrees of the years -- boiling frog parable and all that -- and I'm now okay with maybe 70 - 72, but temperatures upwards of 80? And in a humid ass place? That's another thing, for all the talk about Texas and those states having dry heat -- dry heat my ass. It's so hot that it makes no difference, it's still hot as hell.

(45,410 posts)Texas isn't built for cold freezing winters. Fine. But they can surely handle hot summers. Right?
Maybe it's time to regulate again.

(108,973 posts)Oh, wait, that's the heat!
Except the heat's not on either because it's 68 outside.

(16,931 posts)I run a dehumidifier in the basement.
I have trouble with higher temps and humidity. My utility bills aren't too horrible.

(12,212 posts)when I got into the room, it was freezing, and I saw that the thermostat was set to 65.
I guess that's to keep people awake and ready to gamble (I'm not a gambler, though). But I do love cold temps over hot.

(42,541 posts)but hubby is still working from home. So were bumping it from the usual 74 up to 76 right now. I dont mind wearing a mask all day at work, but I do find it hard to breathe in a warm house.

(3,401 posts)So 74 degrees is my limit at night. Even that requires a fan blowing on me.

(38,309 posts)... our little window air conditioner was basically working full time as a bedroom dehumidifier. It was just powerful enough that we could sleep uncovered. The temperature in our bedroom wasn't much lower than it was outside but the humidity was low enough that we didn't wake up soaked in sweat.
We now live in a place where air conditioning isn't any kind of necessity. Most homes and apartments here don't have it.
When it gets hot inland and that hot air rises it pulls cool Pacific air across us.
Coastal California can be cool in the summer. If you are visiting don't forget to bring a hoodie.
