Eric Adams lashed into mayoral rival Maya Wiley for paying to have private security patrol her leafy Brooklyn enclave while pushing to defund the NYPD, calling it the highest level of hypocrisy.
What do I tell Justins mom? That protection is only for affluent New Yorkers? Adams said Tuesday during a Queens campaign event, referring to 10-year-old Justin Wallace, who was shot dead in Rockaway on Sunday during a dispute between neighbors over parking.
When I read that article today, to learn that a candidate in the race has private security while theyre saying to other families that are frightened over gun violence, that you dont need any more security. Thats just not fair. Thats not fair, Adams said.
The Post reported Monday that the neighborhood association for Prospect Park South, where Wiley lives in a $2.7 million historic mansion, pays for a security guard to drive around the wealthy area daily. Residents, including Wileys live-in partner, Harlan Mandel, chip in $550 a year for the privilege.

(5,307 posts)That's actually perfectly in line with calling for defunding a public police force.
Better I think to attack her "defund the NYPD" stance for its utter dumbness (if in fact that's her stance... I don't pretend to know), and with the fact that most people can't afford private security.

That's quite a glaring piece of hypocrisy, ain't it.
Shame shame.
Millionares & billionares determining the fate of the unfortunate?
Big Fat No to Ms Wiley, then.
But.. but from her endorsement page. Guess its bad billionares, not the priviledged millionares.
But see, she said, "working people".
Can working people afford private security to guard their homes when the PD is underfunded?
Waiting for an answer please, Ms Wiley
If we dont come together as a movement, we will get a New York City built by and for billionaires, and we need a city for and by working people. So we will vote for Maya

(7,947 posts)I'd pay that for extra protection, actually.
Rich people gonna rich. What are we going to point at next?
"She's driving her own car instead of taking a cab like a real New Yorker!"
"She lives in a 9-room house instead of a studio!"
Wouldn't we all, if we had the money?
We keep electing rich people, sometimes extremely rich people. Some are more likely than others to think about those who aren't rich.
FDR, JFK... some rich people, even born-rich people, do have a social conscience.
I think it's way too expensive to run for office and that keeps out poorer candidates, and that's bad. Even upper-middle-class people usually can't afford to take a year off work to run, and that cuts out most of us wage-earners.
But I guess I'd rather have an FDR-rich-person in office than a Joe-the-Plumber "working-class" Trumper type.

(7,947 posts)You don't always have a choice-- you just get a bill in the mail from the HOA.
I assume her "security" is more than just a mall cop driving through the neighborhood once a day?

The rest of us are less important so don't need as much day to day security. (Security meaning not just physical protection but things like food, housing, medical care...)
