Royal Caribbean reverses, won't require passengers on U.S. cruises to be vaccinated

https://www.miamiherald.com/news/business/tourism-cruises/article251909713.html

The about-face is an apparent submission to Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has insisted that there will be no exception made for cruise companies to a newly passed Florida law that fines companies $5,000 each time they ask a patron to provide proof of vaccination. Royal Caribbean Internationalís sister brand Celebrity Cruises (both owned by Royal Caribbean Group) is still requiring all passengers 16 years old or older be vaccinated on its seven-night Caribbean cruises that are restarting from Port Everglades on June 26.

Let's see how giving in to idiot DeSantis works out. My sense is these cruise will not go out anywhere near full. Many cruise passengers are elderly or have health issues that make them vulnerable. Why on earth would they go on a cruise that isn't fully vaccinated? Are there enough MAGATS to fill a ship? Half full cruises lose money.
Has Desantis killed the Florida cruise industry?

Let's see what the other cruise lines do. I will also add that there are plenty of cruise that don't come out of Florida.

Another thought. What will RC do if their foreign ports require passengers to be vaccinated?

At least once a year and only on ships with less than 1,200 max capacity.

No way, no how am I going on a ship without 100% of passengers being vaccinated.

The power that Royal gave to DeSantis to embolden him makes me sick.

9. The cruise will be packed no matter their decision.

The average cruise ship holds around three thousand people. On average there will be just under one thousand unvaccinated, if everyone's interest is steady across vacc and unvacc persons.

That's a blood bath if someone with Covid gets on.

I'm past Covid. It's up to business entities and government bodies at this point. Most have zero need for any type of Covid policy. Some have an outright responsibility to have serious Covid policies, like the industry being discussed here.

My piece of shit Governor wouldn't let people with Covid off of boats and now he wants people to catch it on the same boats. Idiot.

but how on earth are the cruise lines going to reliably verify that all passengers are fully vaccinated? It's not that they all originate from the same local but, in theory at least, start their trip from many different locations including from outside the US.

And don't these cruise ships sometimes pick up additional passengers at their various ports of call?

33. I think the only way

that could be securely accomplished is via something like a vaccination passport but, in the current political climate, especially in the US, it is difficult to imagine that happening. And what of those from other countries?

It could be done I guess but I'm thinking it would not be at all easy unless a bunch of conditions are made a requirement by legislation (I doubt that emails from a pharmacy and pharmacy receipts would be even close to acceptable).

people fo through great lengths to smuggle booze on board. You donít think they will print up a vax card? Or order one off ebay?

However, people that talk about cruise ships being a petri dish crack me up. Yeah it has happened in the past and it does still happen occasionally that there is an outbreak on a ship. But honestly I have never once felt that things were not clean on a cruise ship. Of course I was also in the navy and we never had any real problems with outbreaks there either. I guess maybe a cold here or there maybe but nothing even rings a bell. Been on cruises too and the amount of cleaning that takes place keeps me at ease. The number of sanitization stations is pretty substantial and that was WAY before covid.

Going to the grocery store, or gas station, or even the public library freaks me the fuck out a hell of a lot more than a cruise ship.

in the same amount of time it took to make that cruise. Besides, I'm referring mainly to the behemoths that sail out of Florida. I don't get the appeal To to traveling on those things, when other options are avaalways ilable--including small cruises of a dozen or so people. To each their own.

That is what happened with the auto ferry that I took. It was a complete pain in the ass because all I wanted to do was get my car from point A to point B. Also, the cabin that I had felt really cramped. Never again.

cruises are unlike the auto ferry. They are always in international al water between ports. That is when the casino is open. They don't take diversions just for gambling.
Not telling you to go on a cruise, just that your experience was as close to a cruise as going on a fishing boat.

there are around 200 deaths each year on cruise ships out of 30 million passengers. And most of them are from natural causes or accidents.
There are disease outbreaks at schools, hospitals, hotels, resorts, military bases....

And that's with the previous vaccine requirement in place:

Two people on board a cruise ship in the Caribbean have tested positive for coronavirus, operator Royal Caribbean has confirmed.

The guests, who were sharing a room on the Celebrity Millennium, are asymptomatic and are in isolation.
...
All guests had to show proof of vaccination and a negative Covid test before boarding, the company said. All on-board staff are fully vaccinated.

The two cases were confirmed during end of cruise testing and Royal Caribbean are conducting contact tracing, the company said in a statement.
