Surprise! CDC reversal on masks leaves states, businesses scrambling

https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/surprise-cdc-reversal-masks-leaves-states-businesses-scrambling/story?id=77691769
""Americans are feeling incredible whiplash," one health expert said"

"Governors said they werenít briefed in advance on the plan, despite 24 states and the District of Columbia having some sort of state-wide mask mandate in place at the time of the announcement."

"We were as surprised as anyone by the CDCís announcement Ė learning about it through the press," said Republican Gov. Chris Sununu of New Hampshire, calling CDC messaging in recent months "inconsistent, convoluted, and ever changing."
"Several health experts also said were caught off guard, assuming new mask recommendations would come when more Americans were fully vaccinated. Nearly 36% of the U.S. population is vaccinated, and the pace of shots has declined.

"I thought it would be prudent to wait until everyone who is willing (ages 12 and up) has had an opportunity to be fully vaccinated, around July 1," said Linsey Marr, a virus transmission expert at Virginia Tech.

Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and visiting professor of health policy and management at the George Washington University's Milken School of Public Health, tweeted: "Iím still stunned at the CDC decision."

1. I am stunned too.

Considering in most states we have less than 50% vaccinated, it makes no sense.

5. Yes, I was wondering this also. The CDC has had a hard 18 months or so and they

probably deserve it. Where ever I went today people were still masked up. I think it's going to take sometime for the CDC to recover its reputation.

6. They will be hard pressed to reclaim integrity with such actions

Just ridiculously irresponsible without data on known variants, let alone anything else that might be forthcoming.

Just does not feel like the solid, responsible governance we have come to rely on from Joe & Kamala's team.

7. Yes, I agree with you although apparently many others don't. I was just reading another

tread where about 1/4 of the people were saying they were going ahead with no masks for one reason or another. I found it interesting that people on DU were arguing so hard to forego masks. Seems pretty silly at this point. We've spent over a year trying to stay safe. Why give it up so suddenly? It is the first thing this administration has "said" that I've felt uneasy about.

9. Couldn't agree more.

The whole thing seems "off" to me.

I'm not a paranoid person, nor a germophobe - never have had a flu shot in my life, but this is very different and I, too, am troubled by the high percentage of folks who are seemingly so gung ho to ditch their masks.

Feeling like Alice in Wonderland, yet again...

12. Yes, "off" is exactly the word I was thinking of

Something seems very off with this abrupt and bizarre change. I wonder what's really behind the decision to go with these new guidelines.

8. CDC guidelines are going to change quickly.

Thatís a part of it. Iím assuming the CDC needs to work better with states but it seems as though when new guidelines are written they become public.

The difficulty with the mask aspect is itís virtually a no mask policy. Employees can not be the front lines of this foolish mask war any longer and such a policy is a no win for them.

10. Well, then, they should say that, if that's their underlying reason for this abrupt end to sanity.

Pathetic, imo. Very disappointing, and has me wondering how many dumpites are hanging around CDC.

These CDC folks are supposed to follow the science, not stick their heads in the sand to please maskholes and science deniers!

11. I don't think the decision has anything to do...

With anti-maskers. I think itís based in science and reflects how people should act. Thatís how they have to do it. The fact that their guidelines wonít be followed is a societal issue, not one of the CDC.

I donít find the CDC to be pathetic as you and many others on all sides do. I believe they are doing well, not perfect.
