Poe's law. Removal of posts. Sarcasm/satire/parody.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poe's_law

Poe's law is an adage of Internet culture stating that, without a clear indicator of the author's intent, it is impossible to create a parody of extreme views so obviously exaggerated that it cannot be mistaken by some readers for a sincere expression of the views being parodied.[1][2][3] The original statement, by Nathan Poe, read:[1]

Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is utterly impossible to parody a Creationist in such a way that someone won't mistake for the genuine article.

Similar to Murphy's Law, Poe's Law concerns internet debates, particularly regarding religion or politics.
---------------------------------------

Was it too subtle?

Sometimes I have had posts removed because the s/s/p was not recognized. Sometimes I have been able to get the removal reversed by pointing it out.

The emoji can be crucial.

2. I don't use smileys, emojis, etc. If people don't get my sarcasm, I'm fine with it.

4. Sarcasm that requires a sarcasm emoji is poor sarcasm.

21. You must have limited experience with gun-related threads here at DU.

And yes, there's a modest amount of sarcasm in that title statement.

5. I just got a post removed

because I said the Republican Southern States are bad for the country.
Apparently that is "bashing"

16. And that is fine

But is saying the Southern States have had a negative effect on our country politically really "bashing a group"?
By this logic if we substitute "GOP" for "Southern States" it should likewise be removed.

15. Sure

but I am now in danger of a ban because saying the Southern States have had a negative political effect on our country is considered "bashing".

17. that is exactly why I rarely post anymore

many want to be the victim it seems. I'm a southerner, born and raised in Georgia, worked the entire SE since 1968, lived in Florida for the past 48 years and anyone that thinks your statement is bashing, is deluded. But the Confederacy lives on.

20. The confederacy may or may not live on. But it's now centered in very different states.

Surely you can see that? Read where the lovely folks who brought us January 6 hail from.

7. The sarcasm smilie is indeed crucial; when it doubt, use it... The reader cannot tell tone of voice

...or facial expression.

9. The problem is that some are not good at sarcasm. More are not good at recognizing sarcasm.

The world has gotten so nutty that is is often difficult to recognize sarcasm.

When I think my sarcasm should be clear, I will nevertheless include:

"To the extent needed, "

11. Yip, the lack of tone/voice-inflection in text. I don't use emojis either. Those who don't "get" it

can react badly. One of my mother's references was "reading between the lines," which some people don't do.

12. A lot of people do not understand sarcasm particularly dark sarcasm.

I grew up with sarcasm so recognizing it is easy for me. Just need to know who you are being sarcastic with.
