(70,303 posts)...predate wrestling belts. Not by a lot, but I've seem pictures of Marciano with that type of belt in the late 40s. Wrestling probably appropriated the idea when they became a TV staple a few years later.
They've become so ubiquitous for championships that there is a belt for Tournament of Champions on The Food Network, and for the All-Star championship on Guy's Grocery Games!
I'm not that big on the idea, but it's definitely a thing.
