My uncle had an unusual military career. He quit school at 17 and joined the army.... Korean War. He decided to stay in the army and went through the ranks to Master Sergeant. I remember when he made Staff Sergeant, he told us of his goal to reach Sergeant Major and then retire with that rank.

Instead, he got his G.E.D. From there, he went to night school and earned an engineering degree. The army agreed to station him in N.J. for six years, so he could complete college.

He retired as a Lt. Colonel after a second tour in Viet Nam.

He held every rank, from private to Lt. Colonel --- except sergeant major.
That still impresses me.

It strikes me as weird that a Sergeant Major is a Sergeant--but a Major General is a General .......

(I'm easily amused..... )

Major General use to be Sergeant Major General hence why a Lt General outranks them
