Kristen Clarke faced abuse for taking on Trump. Now she’s poised to lead Justice Dept.’s civil rights team.

President Donald Trump was waging his baseless assault on the election results last fall when Kristen Clarke, head of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, opened her inbox to a stream of vicious threats over her efforts to fight back and protect the rights of voters.

Openly misogynistic, littered with racial epithets, the messages were of the variety that seeks to debase and intimidate prominent minority women. “May you be found guilty by military tribunal and executed by hanging,” one email read.

Clarke, who is Black, posted it on Twitter.

“Not deterred by those who harbor and espouse racism and hate,” she declared.

Now, some conservatives are fearful that Clarke and Vanita Gupta — another civil rights lawyer, who is awaiting a Senate vote on her nomination to the Justice Department’s No. 3 position — will seek to quickly ramp up federal efforts to restructure local police departments, bolster prosecutions of hate crimes and expand voting access for minorities, and have sought to cast them as radical and extreme.

Never met her but I feel proud of her.

Not sure what's radical and extreme about any of that. Fewer citizens needlessly gunned down by twitchy cops? Yes please. Perpetrators of hate crimes held accountable? I'm down with that. More voters? That's called democracy; isn't the country supposed to be the global leader in that? Get used to a more functional nation, conservatives.

First, a lot of the reasons to vote R would go away - a majority of Americans would see that D policies are better for them than the R's policies. We're already seeing the impact of Biden's vaccine ramp up, the COVID relief bill, and a saner government. Imagine $2-3tn going to infrastructure and creating a boatload of jobs for those not in the top 1%.

Second, if the police became accountable for their actions, the image of "scary dark people" starts to change - and a huge boogeyman goes away.

Third, they'd be further pushed into the fringe causing them to be ever more reactionary - then the policies implemented by previous R admins will send a lot of them to jail.

So the Rs in Congress will fight tooth and nail to hold onto their last bit of power.
