Ah yes, because voting is best analogized to a vocation that requires years of incredibly expensive and rigorous training.

voting = right reserved for all citizens over 18.

doctor = voluntary choice of profession. No one has a right to operate on others. Seems to me the GOP would not want to push this too far, lest someone point out Ben Carson, Rand Paul, Dr. Laura, Dr. Drew, Dr. Oz...

William F. Buckley argued that white segregationist southerners were justified in keeping people of color from voting because Black voters were uneducated.

Somehow white uneducated voters of course weren't ever a problem.

So the National Review has a long corporate history of justifying voter suppression.

Age old racist and sexist thinking here. When the constitution was written only white males could vote. Blacks were property with no rights. Women were not allowed to vote.

Heard some time ago a religious pundit state only property owners should be allowed to vote which would mean all renters, college students could not vote.

Sure! you are going to want only those voters who are either those people, or people you can trick into supporting that agenda to have access to the ballot.

Democratic policies help all people and really do not hurt wealthy people all that much. Certainly nothing that would cause them to lose their wealth and have to live like average people. Actual Democratic policies, if you take the D and the R from out of the way and just talk about what the policy is and what it will do, are popular with upwards of 75% of the people. The problem is that the policies put some limits on the amount of power and money that can be accumulated and used to purchase politicians and conservatives do not like that.

So, they literally misinform (lie) to their voters and try to suppress the votes of others in an effort to keep things the way they are, or further, to go back to a time when Rich White Men had even more social, political, and economic power.

Doctors decisions should be based on quantifiable science.
Voter decisions are based on perceptions of self interest, candidate character and personal convictions.

If you want licensed voters running things, better to take the next step and turn over the decisions to panels of experts and eliminate voting altogether. Of course, then you have to vote on who's experts ? Look to the CV-19 circus for clues on how that might work out.

Republicans have shown themselves repeatedly to be corrupt, racist, and sexist. They tried to overthrow a lawfully elected government, and when that failed wrote laws that give them control over the election process and outcome. They are a threat to Democracy. It is baffling to me that they are treated like a legitimate party with any plans to govern.

But then, we shouldn't be surprised. Mike Lee publicly commenting on the GOP's voter suppression efforts and failure to commit to a peaceful transition of power said:

Democracy is not the objective; liberty, peace and prosperity are. We want the human condition to flourish. Rank democracy can thwart that.

Most of us would argue that 'rank democracy' Senator Lee spoke to is what we witnessed on January 6th, the moment disgruntled Trumpers assaulted our Capitol, attempted to overturn a fair election.

Rank democracy is the power of the mob, something Republicans have supported either directly or indirectly, politely tagged it with the title: populist, patriotic fervor. Or in the words of Ron Johnson: a festive family affair.

Time to call the beast what it is: authoritarianism, the stuff of fascists and tyrants. To denigrate voting Americans as 'less than' falls right into a tyrant's playbook.

We shall choose those worthy of voting, of selecting representation, they say.

Another step into the abyss.

We need to flatten these people at the polls, deny them power everywhere. Because it's the only way this unAmerican tune will change.

Voters — individually and in majorities — are as apt to be wrong about things as right about them, often vote from low motives such as bigotry and spite, and very often are contentedly ignorant.
