Someone please help me find a political answer to a voting question.

I can’t seem to find an answer to this question.
When is the last time in a non presidential voting year that the party in power (like the Dems are now) gained seats in the House and Senate ?
Obviously, I’m hoping that happens in 2022, even though all of the political pundits are saying that will not happen in 2022 and that Republicans will regain the majority in both. Argh!

Very disappointed in so few responses. Maybe it's never happened. Funtatlaguy Apr 2021 #3

The Senate is harder to analyze because only 33 States are in play.

If the party in power is bogged down by gridlock and partisanship, they will lose seats. If they do big things and succeed, they will gain. I think Joe has potential coattails in 2022.
