The Minnesota representative Ilhan Omar has backed Major League Baseballs decision to move its All-Star Game from Georgia over a restrictive new voting law. But in doing so she placed herself at odds with another leading progressive, the voting rights campaigner Stacey Abrams.
Abrams, who suffered a narrow defeat in the Georgia gubernatorial race in 2018, commended the MLBs decision on Friday but said she was disappointed the game was being relocated.
I respect boycotts, she said, although I dont want to see Georgia families hurt by lost events and jobs. Georgians targeted by voter suppression will be hurt as opportunities go to other states. We should not abandon the victims of [Republican] malice and lies we must stand together.
On Saturday the PGA Tour and the PGA of America made similar arguments when they said they would not move events scheduled for Georgia this summer. The Masters, perhaps the biggest event in golf, begins in Augusta, Georgia this week.

(15,756 posts)At least I would hope so. Stacey is right about the job loss though.

(58,785 posts)Abrams was hoping to get the advantages of sanctions against the Republicans while mitigating damage to GA workers, many of whom will lose their jobs as a result. Make no mistake, this will be a tragedy for many.
Omar's no doubt sincere in her position, but she's seeking attention where the media cameras are pointed, which just happens to be in GA. Trying to protect GA workers from the worst of the fallout is Abrams' concern and Abrams' job.

(58,785 posts)the Republican attempt to disenfranchise GA voters. And is also a big player for voting rights in the rest of the nation as well.
Ask yourself: What's going on here that Abrams is being styled as just a talker, and Omar a woman of action in Georgia instead of Abrams?
As a national leader for voting rights, Abrams of course is a formidable danger to the right, and just maybe Republican mind-fucking should be suspected.

(21,550 posts)first off... the article itself says that Omar and Abrams both supported MLB's right to move the game. So how are they are odds?
And even if they were... so if you found a rep from MN and a voting rights advocate from GA, and they don't completely agree on something... that's worthy of an article? I don't understand why. What would be significant about that?

There are good arguments on both sides of this issue.
This isn't news, it's two people looking at a situation in different ways. Democrats will never be 100% in lockstep like right wingers are.
