Joe Manchin said $100,000.00 a year in West Virginia is a lot of money

And he is likely right. However, if you earn 80K a year in L A, SF, or NYC you can't afford a home. Seems myopic, no?

35. Also, it's extremely disingenuous framing, as a person making 100K never would have received

a cheque anyway, under any of the previous iterations. You were already into serious reduction levels by 80K.

At 81K, half your last 600 usd cheque was taken away.

Under the old formula a person making 80K usd would get a 1150 usd cheque now.

Under the Manchin/Shaheen new rules, they get nothing.

3. Exactly - the $ amount should be determined by the cost of living

... in each separate area of the country. Joe Manchin doesn't get to decide what people need to live on in New York City, San Francisco or Alaska.

12. As noted, planning would have allowed a poverty level multiplier

Which in NYC is I think 8x the poverty rate. Even in WV they’d get 2x. It would have been great if they’d established a system to do that with these relief checks.

In Socal and the Bay Area, you'll be living in an apartment.

You can rent a crappy apartment on that amount.

17. He is right.

The best bill would have a COLA component to determine the check amount by region. But that is far more complicated to implement. But then people in WVa would be complaining, like the 21 republican governors bellyaching that their states will get less money under the distribution formula.

You can’t satisfy everyone perfectly, so to get something done you simply need to set a standard and execute to it.

We have people to help, an economy to save, in order to save a country. Why are we quibbling over the minor details rather than being as generous as possible to make sure we are helping everyone that needs it?

29. Most people don't live in NYC or SF

As an unemployed American in the heartland, I have little sympathy for someone making six figures bellyaching about not getting a $1400 relief check. If $100,000 per year isn't enough for you to live on in NYC or SF, then a $1400 check isn't going to improve your life much either. And if you're pulling down that kinda salary and whining about the cost of living, then move somewhere else.

30. no one making 100K would have gotten one anyway, Manchin wanted to START the cutoff at only 50K

and if you made 75k or more, you got nothing. Under Machin's proposal, someone making only 65K would have likely gotten only 500, 600 or so USD out of the 1400.

The vast majority of Americans live in more expensive areas than WV. It is nice that you chose to live out in a cheaper area, but our voting base has 10's upon 10's of millions who do not that.

also, I really take issue with this

American in the heartland

What makes your area anymore of a the 'heartland' than somewhere in the Bronx, or Miami, or San Diego, or Honolulu or Atlanta or Portland or Taos? Heartland carries a LOT more than just geographical connotations.

I'm from the Heart of the "Heartland" -- Chicago.

I can't stand the phrase "heartland" and the connotation given to it by the RW propagandists.

The entire nation is hurting.

32. yes, a white MAGAt from rural Wisconsin or Missouri, whose family came over in the 1920's

likely considers themselves a 'real American', versus a native American from Arizona or Washington state, whose ancestors have been living on what is now US soil for thousands of years.

37. Most Dems live in urban and suburban areas,

where people tend to make more but also have higher cost of living. The counties Biden won account for about 70% of GDP. Means testing only hurts our base, and screws the voters who helped him win swing states.

36. This is why means-testing is such a bad idea. All it does is pit people against each other,

arguing about who is deserving or not.

We should KISS (keep it simple stupid). We'd have been far better off just giving everyone the $2,000 they were promised instead of treating people like they are in a carnival game with all these out-clauses and caveats. Voters would have rewarded us for it, but now we're going to have millions of people annoyed at us.
