Rachel is slapping the hell out of Republican Senators.
And she slapped the hell out of Senator Manchin for his hypocrisy. Voting for Trump's nominees and using a different standard for Biden's nominees.

Cruz opposing Beccera at HHS because "he is not a doctor" while voting to approve Alex Azar for HHS even though Azar is not a doctor. The hypocrisy is ridiculous and maddening, but Rachel just guffaws. Sigh |

15. She laughs because
it's just all so completely freaking ridiculous. It's at "You have to laugh to keep from crying" levels of ridiculous. That's why she laughs and makes fun of those fools, NOT because she doesn't take it seriously.
I've been watching her for years now, and I've found that that she often does that kind of thing when someone or something is so ridiculous that discussing it with a straight face wouldn't do justice to the full reality of it. And yes, I AM a huge Rachel Maddow fan. However did you guess? 🤗 |

She laughs when she's not supposed to and she will unemotionally underemphasize the brutal point of her piece after spending 14 minutes building the case. Maddening. I get that she does it for some sort of paradoxical effect, but this isn't theater. It's news.

30. Yes, the laughing has really gotten on my nerves
Once and awhile is fine, but she does it a lot lately and it comes across as very unprofessional. She did it in 2016, the night they called the election for Donald Trump, while the rest of us were in a state of horrified shock. Her show has gotten more and more like a late night talk or comedy show, instead of a serious news and commentary program.
I don't watch MSNBC for entertainment. For that I can turn on Stephen Colbert or Samantha Bee or Seth Meyers. I am watching Rachel less and less now. She was once a must see show for me, but between the over-explaining everything, accompanied by the inappropriate giggling, I find myself preferring Lawrence O'Donnell or Brian Williams. Rachel is very smart and talented. She really can do better than this. |

Last edited Tue Feb 23, 2021, 11:45 PM - Edit history (1) I have several friends from West Virginia, and if you can hear them describe the problems going on down there, omg. ALL of them told me way back in 2004 when Manchin was running for the Senate to watch out for him because he's a crooked, gun-toting, fake man of conscience, DINO, who won't wear well over the years because he's in it for himself and his family, and damned if they're all right. 6. Rachel is slapping the hell out of Republican Senators.
She also went from the clown from West Virginia as well.
I hope Rachel keeps on going after these assholes, especially Manchin. I know the GQP party is mostly full of AMORAL TRAITORS, RACISTS, SECESSIONISTS and FLAT OUT ASSHOLES who only care about themselves, but for Dems to go along with them and vote for their nominees under the biggest, fattest, race-baiting traitor of them all tRump even though folks like Kavanaugh, Grennell et al have the morals of feces, Manchin sat there and voted for them to continue tearing down this country, and although there are those who don't believe it, this country, this experiment almost went down in FLAMES on January 6th 2021. NOW that fool is trying to torpedo the Minimum wage, and his state of West Virginia is broke, poor, drug-addicted and tore down from the floor down, and he wants to offer them $11.00 Per hour will help them get out the hole Manchin doesn't care that they're in? I feel SO sorry for those stuck in WV and who voted for Pres. Biden, but who are suffering under DINO Manchin. Those who are in WV that are racist (Like My friends relatives), they'll learn the hard way unfortunately, as most folks with rock-hard heads DO. I love Jamie Harrison, and I KNOW he sees Manchin acting a damn drunk with power fool, and he KNOWS that Manchin is going to KEEP wielding his power, pointing his finger in Pres. Biden's FACE and try to step on his/Dems agenda, so Harrison knows Dems need a cushion of a few more Senators so Manchin can be totally IGNORED AND FROZEN OUT of the party. My friend from West Virginia in his mid-70's told me last night that he wouldn't piss on Manchin if Manchin was on fire. |

14. It seem obvious the Manchin is play a political game. Why doesn't Biden bring him to the oval....
...office for a sit-down meeting. Biden knows how it works, so my idea may not works, BUT Biden can surely apply one on one pressure to Manchin.
In my limited knowledge, I would say, look, here is what will happen if you keep screwing with me. We will call you out every time you oppose our agenda. You want to blackmail me into giving you and your state special treatment. So here is the "special' treatment I will deal out to you. We will NOT give you OR West Virginia one dollar for your state, and we will let your constituents know it's because you are not a team player. You personally will not get any committee assignments that you would like to have. We will finance primary contenders to run against you. We will treat you EXACTLY like tRump treats his enemies.
You are with us or against us. It is that simple. Join, and we'll make you a hero for bringing home the bacon. Go against us and expect the tRump's special treatment. Biden knows how to pull the right strings, so play hardball with the f**king ass. But keep it legal. |

19. Manchin will never switch because he can't win a GOP primary.
We should convince Gov Jim Justice (who was a Dem but switched to Repub) to run as a Dem and primary Manchin. When Kamala spoke to WV, Gov Justice came out in support of everything she said and of the 1.9T stimulus - making Manchin look like a fool. Justice is also ideologically a conservative Dem but much more populist than Manchin is, and Justice can indeed win statewide against a Repub.

23. Good point. But an opponent "can" win when we're in grave danger
of losing our 50-50 "majority" in less than 2 years? And if he lost, it'd be to a hard-core Republican.
I really don't understand the perversion that's leading some to think defeating (!) a vulnerable Democratic senator in a red state is a good idea. When our "majority" margin is a VP tiebreaker? Shouldn't the targets be vulnerable Republican senators? |

27. True.
I think Manchin votes with us 60% of the time which is far better than even “moderates” like Murkowski, who vote with us 10-15% of the time. Plus, WV would likely replace Manchin with a deep red MAGA person who never votes with us.

33. It's a threat to hold over Manchin's head, he's up for reelection in 2024.
Manchin's arrogance comes from the idea that 'nobody but me' can win as a Dem in 'deep red' WV.
But scratch below the surface and it's obvious that WV has a long history of electing Dems to the Senate (Byrd, Rockefeller) and really is a conservative-left state but votes Repub due to social issues. Give them a conservative Dem (who comes across as empathetic, unlike Manchin) like Jim Justice and he'll win easily IMO. It would be better if Justice would run against Capito (R) at some point for the other seat, so there'd be two Dem Senators from the state. But the idea is to let Manchin know he's not so special as he likes to think he is. |

34. Okay. I'm sure you have good reasons for disliking Manchin.
As a liberal, Manchin's not exactly my dream senator either, and if he did vote Repub "due to social issues" that'd be a huge negative for me. But we have to be careful what we wish for. I've been thinking for a long time, from personal experience, that "first do no harm" should be a guiding principle for voters also.
Although WV is an old New Deal state (is that the conservative-left you mention?) even today Democrat doesn't necessarily mean there what it does in California or NY. Southern Democrat Robert Byrd was a strong conservative (at one time a member of the KKK), like his contemporary southern Democrat George Wallace. Some of WVs cons are still getting around to shifting their old southern Democrat label to Republican. At least former conservative Democrat/now Republican Governor Jim Justice has switched his label to be less confusing in this era. I read that he's trying (again? still?) to abolish the personal income tax and replace it with increased sales taxes. He's selling a version of the many times disproven Republican snake oil that not paying income taxes will so boost the economy that WV's treasury will be overflowing just from the additional taxes paid by the boom. Practically free government, though he admits cutting the state's budget and services will be necessary (even nearly free government's still too much government). Of course, even if trickle-down doesn't work quite as expected ( ![]() Fwiw, Manchin at least opposes regressive taxation, and let's remember that he voted against the giant Republican tax heist in 2017. In reading about him since he became a swing vote, turns out he was the only rep the people of WV sent to congress who did. ![]() |
