Texas GOP congressman: Federal disaster aid will help homeowners with high utility billsBY JOHN BOWDEN - 02/21/21 10:03 AM EST A Texas congressman said Sunday that homeowners in his state who are facing shockingly high electric payments and damage to their homes resulting from recent winter weather would be eligible for aid from the federal government. Speaking on CNN's "State of the Union," Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) thanked President Biden for approving an emergency disaster declaration for the state, and pointed to that declaration when asked by host Dana Bash about reports of Texans facing massive utility bills following days of blackouts and water outages across Texas. "Yeah, that's the current plan, is that the federal assistance will help homeowners, both with the repair...and with the utilities' cost," McCaul told CNN. His comments came in response to reports of Texans facing electricity bills as high as $17,000 resulting from massive demand and low supply over the past week. -snip- Link to tweet more https://thehill.com/homenews/sunday-talk-shows/539766-texas-gop-congressman-federal-disaster-aid-will-help-homeowners

2. Mike McCaul used more than 1.4 million gallons of water at his Austin mansion
https://patch.com/texas/downtownaustin/top-2017-water-waster-austin-was-u-s-congressman-report
AUSTIN, TX — U.S. Congressman Mike McCaul was the top water user in Austin during 2017 —with more than 1.4 million gallons of water used at his sprawling West Austin mansion — according to a published report. The amount could be much higher, the Austin American-Statesman reported. McCaul's status as the top water user is not in dispute given a comparative analysis of other high-volume users across the city, according to the report. But the McCaul family successfully sought a redaction that would have more specifically detailed total usage, the newspaper reported. McCaul blamed the high water usage on "chronic troubles with their water pipes," according to a statement given to the Statesman by his spokeswoman. The spokeswoman declined to specify how long these piping issues have been experienced, according to the report. McCaul's $7.3 million West Austin hillside home is one of 22 residences calculated to have used more than 1 million gallons of municipal water last year, according to the report. The tabulation lists Besty Abell, president of the Buena Vista Foundation, as the second-biggest water user with 1,400,900 gallons of water used. |

12. I'm seeing red right now. What a fucker. And people vote for this asshole.
I remember finding my mother's ration books from WWII when she died. We'll never have rationing like that again. It will always be if you can afford it, you can buy/take it all.

17. Gerrymandered or not,
I would still think this would piss off a ton of working class repubs. But it doesn't. Just like they are ok with Cruz flying to Mexico. If you can do it, why not? I don't get it.

As long as the energy companies get their money, it doesn't matter who pays it, amiright?

9. That may be 'the plan' as he is currently hoping for ...
I got a feeling that ain't gonna be 'the plan' in the end.
Better not fucking be. This is NOT a cost that can be properly attributed to a natural disaster. Those energy companies need to suck it up and eat these costs. This is the DU member formerly known as mr_lebowski.

10. The State of Texas has billions in a "rainy day fund." IMO that's what this event is.
No way the federal govt (meaning us) should be helping to pay these outrageous bills, especially when they want nothing to do with federal regulations, thus causing this in the first place.
IMO if the federal govt helps in this situation it is an incentive for Texas to keep things as is. That is simply wrong. The state itself can deal with the problem and must do so. This is the DU member formerly known as lettucebe.

14. I'm all in favor of federal disaster aid to help people whose homes were damaged,
but taxpayers shouldn't have to pay the gas and electric bills. The energy companies and the state of TX should have to eat those charges; they wanted deregulation and they should pay for it.

Paid low bills and energy shopped for a decade. Now the reaper comes callin and they want the rest of us to pay???
Fuck that! I made $18,000 last year. Paid on $1053 in Fed taxes alone. I get a very small amount of that back. So I paid my share as someone who is just above poverty. Fuck this shit and the politics This is the DU member formerly known as Wawannabe.

22. They wanted the money back and cheap rates. Any idiot knows rates fluctuate and this is not the
first cold snap in TX. They got what they signed up for ASFAIC they owe the money. They also hate any regulation and they got what they voted for. No regulation. Fuck that is right. Time for them to reap what they have sown.
