AOC: AOC: Nation Can Only Heal Once 'Oppressed' Southern States Are 'Liberated'Brittany Bernstein
Wed, January 13, 2021, 7:58 AM CST Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) on Tuesday night suggested that the United States can only heal once “oppressed” states in the south are “liberated.” The Squad member’s comments came during an Instagram live stream to her 8.3 million followers about the Capitol Hill riots and the effort to impeach President Trump. During the stream, she said that Democrats’ U.S. Senate wins in Georgia were a result of “multi-racial” and “multi-cultural” grassroots organization and a sign that “southern states are not red states, they are suppressed states.” “Which means the only way that our country’s going to heal is through the actual liberation of southern states,” she said. “The actual liberation of the poor, the actual liberation of working people from economic, social, and racial oppression. That’s the only way.” https://news.yahoo.com/aoc-nation-only-heal-once-135815248.html?guccounter=1 The interrupted work of Reconstruction must be finished, now that we have a mandate. That means empowering Black and other POC communities, a swell as dismantling the machinery of white supremacy in all its forms. The following is by no means an inclusive list 1. Redistricting so to maximize Black voting power. 2. Federal takeover of local law enforcement where necessary. 3. Equity in education, including radically changing the tax structure so that wealthy white districts don't flourish at the expense of marginalized Black districts. Federal takeover of district and even state education departments if this can't be accomplished any other way. 4. Meaningful gun control laws to reduce the fear of hate crimes against Black communities. 5. Swift, harsh justice against any and all hate crimes, and expansion of the definition of such.

1. A Black and a Jew will represent Georgia in the US Senate.
The liberation has only started.

2. Lol, reminds me of 2016 and Sanders' followers' earnest lectures to AA about
what they didn't understand when they declined to admire the greatness of his vision and dismissal of their agenda. Neither understanding that people can hold different beliefs with validity, nor respect for those who do, are strong points for zealots.
![]() Whatever. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez's northeastern revolutionary dogma is showing. Southern cultures, southern conservatism. and southern Christianity are not just evil white things, by any means. |

8. Shell, are you sure this, perhaps inadvertent, disrespect is
actually intended to excite southerners, especially AA, into dreaming of someday being free?
Her following is mostly young white, definitely not southern, and this talk of "liberating" the south may just be revolutionary puffery directed at them. The other possibility is that she's genuinely hoping to LW-radicalize those vulnerable to it down here. After all, Trump did, he's on his way out, and they're going to be needing a new leader. Extremist types are @10-12% in any population, just waiting for the right/wrong influence to come along and excite them. |

10. Black people know how racist the south is.
Racism is out of control. Texas still has at least a dozen sundown towns.

12. At very least, if there can be an impact made on
voter suppression and gerrymandering, the political landscape will change.

15. Yep, but a good first step is getting to a point where
people can vote and that their vote counts (ending gerrymandering).
Those two things are the foundation of change. I'm on the same page as you, I think that those two are probably the most vital to start with! |

11. Somebody from New York City
lecturing southerners will go over like a lead balloon.
We are making good gains in the South and we absolutely don't need AOC talking about a federal takeover of police and education. Worry about your own district and let southern democrats deal with southern problems. |

16. And tell me
what happens to these federally controlled schools and police departments when Republicans have power. Power that they will gain by smashing democrats over the head with stories of overbearing federal authority and failures that will be sure to happen.

17. They have had power and look what they have done to our education system
Public schools and education have been neglected because of republicans also defunding the programs. So, I suppose it's our time to use the resources we have available and BUILD BACK BETTER! And we will definitely will have to wait and see what happens. I think we are heading into a new era of opportunities. But hey that's just me, but hopefully there are others who think so as well. |

21. Has AOC made fun of Southern or Appalachian people?
Are you aware of any instances of her doing that?
Anyway, we're not talking about making fun. We're talking about dismissing ideas out of hand because someone from New York is talking about them, rather than someone from Alabama. |
