N.J. pharmaceutical company's COVID-19 vaccine could be a game-changer. Here's why.
As the nation struggles to scale up its COVID-19 immunization rollout, another vaccine in the works could soon help bridge the gap.
The two vaccines available now — one by Pfizer and another by Moderna — require two doses: a priming shot and then a booster three or four weeks later, depending on which company’s injection you get. But another vaccine on the horizon — developed by Johnson & Johnson — would require only a single dose. It could be a game-changer for distribution, which continues to drag in New Jersey and beyond. The vaccine is still in development, but the New Brunswick-based company is expected to release the findings of its Phase 3 clinical trial — known as “Ensemble” — later this month, the company says. 3. The company I work for has been subcontracted to make the
J&J vaccine (I imagine a lot of other 3rd party manufacturers are doing so too), and all the news I'm seeing is very positive about it. By April there could be 7 or 8 approved vaccines. Unfortunately the next 2 months will be hard, especially with the variant.

4. One dose vaccine would be really nice.
Especially if we will have to get a vaccine annually.

6. We have been waiting on J&J and the other oldline versions.
The MRna vaccines by their nature will be faster to develop but harder to handle and manufacture. The technology J&J is using is slower to develop but more robust and scalable. What we are seeing in real time is how this will play out in the future. Quick response with MRna for threatening viruses followed by those suitable for mass campaigns.
We knew this and have been counting on it. |

7. J&J's vaccine can be stored in a normal refrigerator
In disclosing the start of the phase 3, J&J also called out the storage requirements of its vaccine. The candidate is expected to be stable for two years at -20°C and for upward of three months in the 2°C to 8°C range used to store many biologics. J&J said the candidate is “compatible with standard vaccine distribution channels and would not require new infrastructure to get it to the people who need it.”
