Breaking Big: Senator Mitch McConnell is said to believe President Trump committed impeachable offe

Breaking News: Senator Mitch McConnell is said to believe President Trump committed impeachable offenses, and to be pleased Democrats are moving to impeach him.

McConnell is said to be pleased about impeachment, believing it will make it easier to purge Trump from the Republican Party.

Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, has told associates he believes President Trump committed impeachable offenses and that he is pleased that Democrats are moving to impeach him, believing that it will make it easier to purge him from the party, according to people familiar with his thinking. The House is voting Wednesday to formally charge Mr. Trump with inciting violence against the country.

At the same time, Representative Kevin McCarthy, the minority leader and one of Mr. Trump’s most steadfast allies in Congress, has asked other Republicans whether he ought to call on Mr. Trump to resign in the aftermath of last week’s riot at the Capitol, according to three Republican officials briefed on the conversations.

While Mr. McCarthy has said he is personally opposed to impeachment, he and other party leaders have decided not to formally lobby Republicans to vote “no,” and an aide to Mr. McCarthy said he was open to a measure censuring Mr. Trump for his conduct. In private, Mr. McCarthy reached out to a leading House Democrat to see if the chamber would be willing to pursue a censure vote, though Speaker Nancy Pelosi has ruled it out.

Taken together, the stances of Congress’s two top Republicans — neither of whom has said publicly that Mr. Trump should resign or be impeached — reflected the politically fraught and fast-moving nature of the crisis that the party faces in the wake of last week’s assault by a pro-Trump mob during a session to formalize President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s electoral victory.

16. Another snip...

Mr. McConnell, Republican of Kentucky has indicated he wants to see the specific article of impeachment that the House is set to approve on Wednesday, which is expected to draw support from as many as a dozen Republicans, potentially including Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the party’s No. 3 in the House. But he has made clear in private discussions that he believes now is the moment to move on the weakened lame duck, whom he blames for Republicans losing the Senate.

If Drumpf resigns due to the walls closing in, I can see the Republicans saying drop impeachment and let’s get to work on the nation’s business. We can’t have them take over the narrative and try to sweep their complicity under the rug. Get them on the record by forcing a vote.

19. The Hill: Schumer calls on McConnell to let Trump impeachment trial start immediately

Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) on Tuesday called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to reconvene the chamber immediately to allow an impeachment trial of President Trump before Inauguration Day.

Schumer disputed McConnell’s claim laid out in a memo circulated to colleagues Friday asserting it would take all 100 senators to agree to allow business to proceed on the Senate floor before senators are scheduled to return on Jan. 19. Under McConnell’s interpretation, a second Trump impeachment trial in the Senate could not begin until 1 p.m. on Jan. 20, about an hour after President-elect Joe Biden is slated to be sworn into office.

“Leader McConnell is saying you can’t call the Senate back after the House votes for impeachment because it requires unanimous consent — the consent of every senator. That’s not true,” Schumer said at a televised press conference in New York.

Schumer argued that legislation passed in 2004 allows the leaders of both parties to reconvene the Senate at any time.

“There was legislation passed in 2004 that allows the Senate minority and majority leader to jointly reconvene the Senate in times of emergency. This is a time of emergency,” Schumer said.

“I’ve asked him to call the Senate back — all he needs is my agreement. I’m still minority leader,” Schumer said.

The Democratic leader called on the Senate to “come back ASAP and vote to convict Donald Trump and get him out of office now before any further damage is done.”

The House is expected to pass an article of impeachment on Wednesday."

I hope they can work something out quickly.

Sources confirm that McConnell has indicated that this impeachment effort will help rid Trump/Trumpism from the party. But McConnell has not said if he will vote to convict. McConnell pins the blame squarely on Trump for failure in GA and costing them Senate. They haven’t spoken.

Whatever he is he isn't stupid.

If he is "pleased" about impeachment this time its only because he has taken the attack on his own life personally. Or possibly because he sees a cynical partisan benefit in it as a means of taking up Senate time in the incoming administration which might otherwise be devoted to undoing his nefarious life's work.

In '74 Goldwater & some Republican leadership went to the Whitehouse & told Nixon he was going to be impeached & convicted.

It looks to me like some Republican leadership is trying to do this, with notorious slow-learner Mr Trump.

Impeachment is a forgone conclusion with the House, but the Senate, well... If McConnell wants him out, Mr Trump is probably gone. But the cost would be fatal to many senatorial careers, let alone reps. Resigning would solve most of the immediate problems and leave the door open for Mr Trump to run another day.

I don't see him taking the offer but ....

Yeah, Trump was an experiment in getting the GOP a sock puppet as POTUS, but it all went wrong.
People caught on.
Experiment failed.
Now let's clean up this mess - impeachment will do it.
Once that is done, we can try to find a more suitable candidate for 2024 to get us that end game goal - GOP in power, in perpetuity!

In short, Mitch isn't an uncle you can trust.
