Schumer looking at employing rarely used move to force Senate trial before Trump leaves office

From CNN's Manu Raju and Phil Mattingly

As House Democrats debate when to send the articles of impeachment over to the Capitol, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is exploring whether to use emergency authority to reconvene the Senate and hold the trial before President Trump leaves office, according to a senior Democratic aide.

This would require support from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to carry this out under the authority granted to the leaders in 2004. It would not require the support of all 100 senators.

At the same time, Democrats in the House are debating when to send the articles, with support growing to send them over right away, as House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer indicated today.

6. Some of the Wednesday asswipes were hunting him

He was also visibly outraged by the whole thing, and instrumental in getting the session back together to get the vote certified so that, as he put it, "the thugs wouldn't win." He was pissed at his own caucus members who insisted on going ahead with their challenge plans, and made sure that those challenges were perfunctory instead of the massive timesucks that were originally planned. McTurtle may never be our friend but for the moment he does seem to be the enemy of our enemy.

12. I think McConnell knows how the chips landed and he's done.

He was likely expecting that there'd be a news media-attractive protest outside, and Hawley and Cruz were gonna do their thing inside, but I sense he was PISSED that all got ruined. I'm sure he's ready for a nap.

24. Me either.

My sense is, one way or another, his revenge will end up being legendary...yertles not to be fucked with lightly.

That's NOT a compliment; I hate the man and most of what he stands for. But he IS smart, and hes a 'long-term' thinker...that kind of adversary almost requires acknowledgement of skillset...whatever else you might think of him.

I suspect trump and his kids are about to find out just how cold-blooded turtle-man can be.

5. it makes so much sense to wait...

until there is a chance of his being convicted. I understand people wanting it done yesterday, but don't they realize as long as Republicans have the majority, it isn't going to happen? Maybe it doesn't matter? They push, they get what they want, and then they don't want what they got... and vote for the next asshole.

8. Don't be so sure

As each day goes by, it's becoming more likely they can get 67 votes to convict. Even some republican senators are saying this. Who wants to go on record as a senator who supports insurrection? That, alone, would dry up their source of campaign funds given what big money donors are doing today.

11. I just don't trust...

it would be great if one Republican spoke the truth. But they can't do it. Even when they try, they have to revert back to favorite lies, to put a shiv in the other side

14. Having your workplace invaded and your life threatened can be clarifying

McConnell himself seems to have been quite determined to put his finger in Trump's eye by making sure the business of certifying the election got done that day. In fact I'd speculate that if Sasse is right and the 67 votes are there, Mitch may be one of the reasons.

I haven't seen where he stated there are enough votes to convict. I heard he said he would consider impeachment

28. and now the big donors are threatening to withhold $

How sad that our corporate overlords who's been funding these a-holes are the ones who may be the final nail that gets them to do the right thing. Even if all their reasons are wrong (not that this is anything new).

16. Concerned Republican Senators can vote against Trump easily...

...by simply being absent from the chamber at voting time.

Two thirds of the Senators present (not total) are required.
