Talk Radio Owner Orders Rhetoric Dialed Back
Too little, too late.
![]() https://politicalwire.com/2021/01/11/talk-radio-owner-orders-rhetoric-dialed-back/ Talk Radio Owner Orders Rhetoric Dialed Back January 11, 2021 at 7:15 am EST By Taegan Goddard “After months of stoking anger about alleged election fraud, one of America’s largest talk-radio companies has decided on an abrupt change of direction,” the Washington Post reports.
“Cumulus Media, which employs some of the most popular right-leaning talk-radio hosts in the United States, has told its on-air personalities to stop suggesting that the election was stolen from President Trump — or else face termination.”

1. Link to the original WaPo article (paywall warning)
https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/media/cumulus-radio-conservative-election-fraud/2021/01/11/e12ec46e-537c-11eb-a817-e5e7f8a406d6_story.html
“We need to help induce national calm NOW,” Brian Philips, executive vice president of content for Cumulus, wrote in an internal memo, which was first reported by Inside Music Media. Cumulus and its program syndication arm, Westwood One, “will not tolerate any suggestion that the election has not ended. The election has been resolved and there are no alternate acceptable ‘paths.’ ”
The memo adds: “If you transgress this policy, you can expect to separate from the company immediately.” A Cumulus representative did not respond to repeated requests for comment on Sunday. |

3. And there goes their audience . . . .
After decades of Flush Phlegmball (the gateway drug), he's no longer enough.
That's why Savage/Levin/et. al. have flourished, and from there, there's no more down to go, except for Stormfront and the like. Without the hate hit, growing more industrial-strength every year, the rubes may as well be listening to the yard sale call-in show on the local AM station. |

9. There's still plenty for them to hate
Now that the Democrats are in power, hate radio will play the victim card over and over. “See what the socialists are doing to freedom loving Americans now?” And the poor, aggrieved MAGAts will listen slavishly.

. . . . as it always is, for every change in the federal code or gay wedding cake topper, it's not going to have the same delicious End Times mouthfeel.
Though as you point out, and to paraphrase Humphrey Bogart, "We'll always have Socialism." |

44. Ever since Ronnie Rayguns deep-sixed...
the fairness doctrine. Then the GOP moneymen bought up every failing AM radio station in the country - well over 1000 - and in came Rusty Limbaugh to demonize Democrats. Then came Murdoch and Ailes with FOX, which really pushed the envelope on the truth. But the right-wing zealots weren't done yet. Newsmax really tore the lid off "alternative facts", and then OAN, which has no tether to reality at all.
So thanks, Ronnie Raygun. I hated your decrepit old ass in the 80s, but you're the gift that keeps in giving.....SHIT! |

7. Well, Well
Apparently the orange menace was NOT really good for business long term.
He's not yet out of office & big business is discarding him like an empty wrapper. BI, Forbes, Amazon, Apple, Google, several companies pulling money from sycophants, and now Cumulus. It's almost as if they would have made their money if he was never president, and they'll continue to make it when he's gone. Well, it's not almost like that. It'sexactly like that. |

13. Too Many Of Them...
...not really culpable. And the 2 magazines, as long as they didn't promote the vote fraud lie are shielded.
It's more that big business likes the status quo & stability. And, aside from COVID, the Obama recovery economy was still humming. So, they all knew the whole time that the last 4 years of profits & rising stock prices had nothing to do with the manbaby in the WH. But, the crazy is creating instability & uncertainty. So, he no longer represents economic status quo. Also, (not exactly a profile in courage), he's gone anyway. So, cutting him loose early carries no risk. The risk here is to the Rs in general. Big business, going forward, may see THEM as a risk, not dems talking corporate taxes & regulations. Open revolt is much worse for business that EPA regs. Especially since environmental abatement measures are already a sunk cost! |

10. "It would not have been possible for us to take power, or to use it in the ways we have,
without the radio." - Joseph Goebbels
Fascist hate radio is complicit in turning tens of millions of Americans into deranged fascist lunatics, who are dangerously out of touch with reality. Cumulus was just following Goebbel's long term Nazi blueprint for propagandizing ignorant people into becoming a fascist mob, who would worship, and be easily controlled, by an authoritarian dictator. |

32. In early Oct. 2019 I was driving to West VA and I was on a bridge crossing the Ohio River and ...
... I had the radio on scan and I hit on one of the many right wing stations. It struck me funny
to hear an out and out nazi sympathizer, Sebastian Gorka, and look at the Ohio River valley where in the 1940s hundreds of thousands of Americans came from in order to fight the Nazis in WW II. One of the worst things that Ronald Reagan did was get rid of the "fairness doctrine" and so for the past 2.5 generations millions of Americans have been bathed in non stop misinformation and that bull shit fed the cancer on American which "bloomed" in the attack on the Nation's Capitol in order to stop Joe Biden being President. sorry to ![]() |

43. You don't need to apologize for that rant.
A friend and I discussed the loss of the Fairness Doctrine when it happened. We anticipated big problems.
I have to remind myself sometimes that everyone wasn't in agreement about fighting the nazis. I watched The Remains of the Day again last night. As late as the 1980s I heard my boss's boss say, "Hitler wasn't all bad." People can be awful, disgusting, wreckless, selfish, and hateful. |

Why can't they have the courage of their real convictions and just admit that they don't care about no damn democracy, don't want no democracy, in fact, don't even want or care about no pesky free and fair elections either?
They just want their authoritarian daddy figures in power to tell them who to hate and when to do it. Oh, and to tell them they're "patriots" and throw the words "freedom" and "constitution" around alot without really caring about or wanting either. Come on, stop being cowards and tell us who you really are and what you really want, Buttercup. |

Remove their permission to broadcast on American airwaves and block the frequencies. Arrest the staff too and ban them from the industry!
Burn the whole network of liars down! Make them apologize in public to everyone they lied to. Mao had a point about that. Then go after the Mercers and the other enablers who financed it all and who own the networks, affiliates and shell companies. And finally get Rupert Murdoch and his criminal spawn in court and charge them too. |
