"That's Gotta Come From Rupert"

Thoroughly fed up with the president’s “insanity,” and bidding farewell to Post bigwig Col Allan—recently treated to burgers in the Oval Office!—Trump’s favorite newspaper is getting new management. Incoming boss Keith Poole, says one tabloid insider, “needs to come in and transform the newsroom.”

On Wednesday, after an unruly mob of MAGA extremists stormed the Capitol Building—kind of like an army of invading orcs from Lord of the Rings but with neo-Nazis mixed in—some of the most Trump-friendly columnists from Donald Trump’s most favorite newspaper, the New York Post, sat down to compose their thoughts on the insurrectionist bedlam. It wasn’t pretty.

“The shocking scenes in and outside the Capitol complex were not displays of too-zealous patriotism. They were unpatriotic and un-American,” wrote Michael Goodwin. “First among the long list of casualties is Trump’s legacy.... He gave the hanging party the rope to use against him and spread glee among the Never Trumpers. This time, there is no defense of him. He owns this.” The headline of Miranda Devine’s latest column was similarly scathing: “From the Senate to Mike Pence, Trump destroys the party on the way out the door.”

These takes have only further amplified the Post’s thundering turn on America’s former reality-television star in chief, who twice received a presidential endorsement from Rupert Murdoch’s prized American tabloid. The 180 was laid bare on the front page of the Post’s December 28 edition. “Mr. President ... STOP THE INSANITY,” the headline screamed. “You lost the election – here’s how to save your legacy.” The accompanying editorial, which debunked Trump’s conspiracy-laden challenge of the election results, was all the more blistering: “Sidney Powell is a crazy person. Michael Flynn suggesting martial law is tantamount to treason. It is shameful.” As a Post source told me, “I’ve never seen such a brutal takedown. That’s gotta come from Rupert. Nobody else would make that call.”

Trump has had a decades-long love affair with the Post, which fueled the real estate developer’s self-created mythology as he swaggered through the pages of the tabloids in the ’80s and ’90s. Shortly before the new year, he reportedly broke bread with outgoing Post bigwig Col Allan inside the Oval Office. Their lunchtime powwow, which consisted of hamburgers and Coke (the beverage, not the drug, in case anyone wondered otherwise), apparently flew under the radar here in the U.S., but not in Allan and Murdoch’s native Australia, where must-read gossip hound Andrew Hornery served up all the calorific dish in The Sydney Morning Herald.
