Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signs 'stand your ground' bill

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Gov. Mike DeWine on Monday signed a controversial “stand your ground” bill that would eliminate Ohio’s “duty to retreat” before using force in self-defense.

Senate Bill 175, fast-tracked through the Ohio General Assembly last month by DeWine’s fellow Republicans, will make Ohio the 36th state to no longer require people to retreat before they can justifiably hurt or kill someone in self-defense.

(snip)

Senate Minority Leader Kenny Yuko, a Richmond Heights Democrat, said in a statement that he’s “extremely disappointed” in DeWine’s decision to sign the “stand your ground” measure.

“This is a dangerous bill that will put Ohioans’ lives at risk,” Yuko stated. “This is not what people meant when they asked us to ‘do something’ last year after the deadly mass shooting in Dayton.”

1. I tried to warn people

‘He’s not a big wingnut,’ they said. I knew this was coming.

3. OH has become a really red state, I am afraid.

It's hard for a Democrat to win a state wide office in OH.

6. So far

He has caved to the racist gun lobby, the “pro life” groups (which is a hideous misnomer), and the “open all the businesses up” crazies.

I feel like we’re sinking into quicksand here.

19. We've reached a point where if a Republican isn't drooling, hair on fire, and is wearing pants

they're elder statesmen.

2. In other words, Ohio used a crisis to pass legislation that favors the gun lobby and ...

anyone looking for an excuse to shoot someone they don't like.

8. That's the point of the law:

For gun-owners to be able to commit homicide, and get off on a self-defense plea that would be highly questionable without the law. The draft legislation is usually written by lobbyists for the NRA.

9. Aristus,

In December, in two separate incidents, in Columbus, cops shot and killed unarmed black men as they were just going about their business.

Just so raw in everyone’s mind right now the damage this has done, and now this. It’s inexplicable. It’s so depressing. It’s like a punch in the gut.

12. Cops are the worst with the "I was in fear for my life!" defense.

If they're that scared and skittish that they have to blast everything in sight any time someone cuts a loud fart, they really, really shouldn't be cops.

I used to respect cops, until I found out what trigger-happy thugs they are...

13. A few days ago

He signed a bill requiring all fetal tissue from terminated pregnancies be either buried or cremated at the expense of the mother.

So, my best friend’s daughter, who was inside out with grief over her ectopic pregnancy last year, her first pregnancy .... would have had this ridiculous and cruel burden foisted upon her.

I hate all Republicans with the heat of 1000 suns. You can’t trust them to be reasonable and compassionate, EVER. I hate them all!

15. So do I, Ohiogal.

I am so sorry you have such horrible poliiticians in your state. It must be so frustrating. Charlie Baker, the republican governor of MA tried to prevent lowering the age of parental consent for an abortion to 16 years old and it was overridden by the MA Senate who expanded abortion access in the state.

I feel so fortunate to live here sometimes. And Baker isn't even really that bad, as far as republicans go. However it says something about the fact that we are the number one state in education in the entire nation, and I think this is important going forward for all states. An educated populace will elect better, more progressive politicians and that is why we need a strong public education system nationwide. You can see the correlation state by state very clearly.

I mean, look at these absolute MORONS coming from the south and some of the midwestern states. They are barely literate and don't even believe in science. How can these people possibly be allowed to govern in a modern society? It's absurd!

Anyway, sorry for the rant, I am just so sick of these neanderthal men making decisions that they have no business being involved in.

BTW, Happy New Year! Hope you are doing well otherwise!

21. Thanks, smirkymonkey!

We’re doing well here! I hope the same for you!

I’m telling you, if my three adult kids didn’t all live in Ohio, I’d be outta here.

GOPers don’t want people to have a good public education because more secular education equals more people voting Democratic.

I used to think DeWine wasn’t as bad as some of the mouth breathers back when he had Dr. Acton on his staff, but the dumbasses here didn’t like a woooomin telling them what to do and so they scared her off with death threats. And ever since, DeWine has just kept on caving to the crazy. He has been showing his true colors. I really think he’s afraid of losing his next election bid.

We still had something around 45% of Ohioans vote for Joe, but you’d never know it the way the Rethugs dominate our state legislature. I am so sick and tired of being under their thumb! It’s like falling down a rabbit hole of ignorance. This state is impossibly gerrymandered.

We’re supposed to re-draw district maps before the mid terms .... might make things a wee bit better.

I am glad your state is very blue! Wish we could turn Ohio around! Best wishes for you in 2020!

22. Hey Ohiogal!

I have faith in you guys! I think you will eventually turn Ohio around soon. You are so close!

My company is based there and I know a lot of people who are blue and powerful and active and I know they are working hard to turn things around. Don't despair! A lot can change in a few short years! Keep the faith!
