ATTN DU! A warning about gay & lesbian neighbors. This happened to me.

They bake cookies, leave 'em on your front porch in pretty boxes, and include clever notes too.

I used to think of what hell on earth they would drop on anybody who bothered my son.
BTW he has grown up straight, is married, and now is a dad himself.

Can I ask you a question as a straight white guy? I got to the bottom of the cookie
box and I ate two ginger/sugar cookies with colored "sprinkles" on them. Will I become
gay and will the gay PTB pick out a man for me to marry or do I have a choice in the
matter? BTW how can I break the news to a woman I have been seeing?

Two old men touching your naked body under a flimsy poncho and oiling and washing your body was not all it was cracked up to be.

Granted pantomiming my own death in three different ways if I revealed the secret handshakes still freaks me out. But what do you expect when the founder had sex with 14 year olds girls by threatening them with death of their whole families if they didnít marry him.

35. kidding, yes...

But remember in this culture, many of us were not exposed to anything about being gay that was honest. We were taught lies about homosexuality and to fear it. I know I have a lot of information to catch up on. Mostly the subject of homosexuality was just a black box that we knew nothing about and what was revealed to us was shameful. My generation is trying to catch up to the facts and trying to shed the biases we were taught. Please help us and try to remember we are trying to learn better, even as we reveal the biases we were taught and the ignorance that lingers and that we continue to try to overcome.

Bohemian styling!

You're in Seattle, It's time to be hippie-fabulous!!!

Drive by decorating? Easy. Its where a centralized network of fab operatives sneak you a gift certificate to a fancy eatery to lure you away. When your gone, we break into your house, rework your living room and kitchen for something much more awesome

Actually, that sounds like one hell of a great reality series idea.

Of course, people would probably get pissed when they got home, or maybe not, but hey, that could be part of the appeal!

Some people might even think they're haunted!

Canít cook worth a shit but we can rewire your house or fix your plumbing.

We just bought a house but havenít moved in yet. Weíve been running back and forth doing little projects.

I think we are being sized up by the three neighbor moms. Iím sure theyíve figured it out by now. I feel like a piece of meat.

But thatís ok, they look like they might be fun. AND they had Black Lives Matter signs on their front lawns. Which is a very good sign. It helped sell the house. I think one of the other houses had a teacher union sign too!

Iíll seal the deal with the giant snowblower I just bought if we get snow. Great way to make friends.

106. I have next door

What I was think is type in the address and 5 houses in each direction a list of people and anything they want to share and public records search.

Next door is the lost cat and dog message board. Which is great. Our neighborhood is on the WA side of the Columbia River and it thinks houses on the south side in OR are in the same ďneighborhoodĒ is an another example of next doorís shortcomings. Itís not properly fenced around a physical neighborhood.

I just want an app that tells me how many Evangelicals are in my cal-du-sac. I bought new and half of them are not cool and right wing bigots. Having good neighbors is wonderful having ones you do not like and are judged by is not fun at all.

There has been at least 6 families in our neighborhood that did not ďfitĒ and they sold at the first chance.

As the daughter of a gay parent, I am leery of any suggestion that gay people are less diverse (in every sense) than straight people, no matter how well meaning.

They are not super-people . . . nor should we expect them to be. They shouldn't have to be super-special in order to be accepted as full human beings with the same civil rights as anyone else.

109. Yup, and I should've known better too due a work project I did recently about disability rights.

One of the themes was the exasperation people with disabilities experience with well-meaning people who praise them as courageous and inspiring superheroes just for carrying out normal everyday activities. They call it the "supercrip stereotype" and see it as a form of othering (much like what I just did!).

Anyway, thanks for the reminder and Happy New Year to you!

When we are gonna meet we tell our respective dogs the other dogs name and they run
to the back door and or down the alley to see each other. They sleep for hours afterwards.

Your six pound dog would be more than welcome. No doubt he/she would be boss in no time.

Mostly a long time ago, I dealt with a good amount of harassment about sexual orientation.

What I really hope for is people coming to a place where a range of sexual orientation and identity/"being" generally, is not just acceptable, it is understood to be part of being human.

30. My Ex-spouse came out 20+

Years ago. Grew up several houses away as kids. Never knew, those days I think we assumed the gays popped out of the sky as fully grown adults. Surely your best pal wasn't gay.....
We decided to be upfront with our child about why we had split. My feelings and hope were that if we discussed this openly, someday no one else would experience the heartbreak we did as a family. Maybe our child could be the friend a person could trust to come out to. There was no animosity between us, I understood it to be a situation purely influenced by society. I couldn't quite find
my reasons then, but I knew things had to change.
I've been a full champion for equality and acceptance, so much so people speculate about me. Who cares. 3 hearts shattered in a million pieces from ignorance.

When this happened in our family, the young/adult/children were told to keep it all a secret.

This is how we ended up where we were. Still love and care for each other very much. Cruel. In more ways than one.

48. I hope the same thing David. Young people today seem much more accepting of the fluidity of

sexual gender and preference. So I think the future is hopeful.

When my daughter was a teen, we watched Milk, the Harvey Milk movie.
She did not understand the scene where the police raided a gay bar.
She said, being gay is not illegal Mom, what the heck is going on here.

I explained how it was when I was young and she was in disbelief. I took this as real progress in the younger generation.

I love Harvey Milk, he is one of my heroes.

Shocked when my child's friends had come out, like no big deal. My sibling couldn't imagine that happening when we were in school.
Thank God things are changing.

81. Thanks for sharing that.

I like that it may be less challenging for young gay people now than in the past, even recent past. That said I think Iíve learned from my experiences with anti-gay sentiment and actions and it has helped me to be aware of and motivated me to oppose oppression of others.

83. Despite the progress, there is much work to be done.

I worked in health care and have friends and family members who work in that field as well. The LGBT community is greatly underserved.
Teens are still at risk from even their own family.

Because the concept of sexual identity and preference is now fluid and complex, there are still societal acceptance issues.

Yes good for you, turning your pain to speak out for those who are oppressed.

38. I have always lived in areas that like artists

and unconventional people (40 years in different cities).

What I want to know is what would separate and distinguish "gay" people from the artists, individualists, liberally minded, etc. How do you know if someone is gay, do they wear a sign? Do artists and liberals have a certain appearance compared to gay people? I don't know which of the people I see are gay or not unless they are actually making out right in front of me. How and why are they identified as gay? Does it make a difference in being a good neighbor?

.... women, are not sisters, live together, have the same last name (married?), and rock the gay
flag @ times so I guessed them to be gay.

Does it make a difference in being a good neighbor? No, but overall "they" tend to be nice but
I have had a few G & L neighbors who were not nice people.

Log Cabin Republicans even proved that "they" can be self centered, greedy assholes just like other, normal Republicans. Itís like whom they love is irrelevant to their measure as a human being.

Itís the ultimate irony, with all of the hate in the world, finding true love makes you hated.

I love Christmas cookies. It bonds us godless heathens to the holidays.

44. After we moved out of our old house the gay neighbors saved the life of the neighbor

On the other side of his house.

One of them was a retired military officer who came out after retirement. An elderly lady moved into our house because her son purchased it. A deranged man broke in and proceeded to stab her to death. She bled out on the gay neighbors couch. Anyway the other neighbor heard the screaming and broke in to try to save her. He was stabbed in the liver. Stumbled over to the gay couples house. Because one of them was retired military he knew how to save his life. Both were honored by the city as heroís. Best neighbors we ever had. Served us caviar on occasion as well.

To some of their neighbors, however, they might be known as "housemates."

We've returned the favor, dropping off cookies and other baked goods, as well as some of the garlic sauce my wife invented when we owned a Caribbean/Jewish restaurant.

And even 25 years later, after you both have moved to different states, they ALWAYS remember to send you a birthday card.
