Is there a "visual connection" between trumpers today and hippies in the 60s/70s?
I've been pondering this for a while, but the thought never really jelled. Not sure it still has, but here goes anyway.
Back in the late sixties, "counterculture" members (aka hippies) dressed and behaved similarly to show they were... well... counterculture members. Back then they were dedicated liberals, at least in public. Meanwhile, the establishment they objected to consisted of politicians and professionals who dressed and acted (for lack of another word) "normally." Nowadays, we see so many of donnie's followers -- dedicated conservatives, at least in public -- dressing and acting similarly (and I don't really want to say this, but I've noticed it so many times): heavyset, dressed in worn jeans, shirts, and baseball caps, and the men sporting long beards and hair. And so many of them seem to have large pickups. Meanwhile, the politicians and professionals that they follow dress "normally." I still can't quite put my finger on this, but I'm starting to find it interesting that there may be some kind of "cultural explanation" for something like this.

5. Trumpers and Hippies?
I can't think of any two groups of people who could be farther apart.
I was in the Haight Ashbury in 1967, the summer of love. While some political movements grew out of that, the hard core hippies really weren't all that political. The summer of love was a huge block party that lasted about six or eight weeks. Saying much more about it would be over-thinking it. |

Absolutely not. Totally different set of values. We were into peace and live, these jerks preach hate and chaos.

I don't wear suits and ties either. I don't wear the ugly red shirts and hats but I don't dress like a professional either.

That was never a hippie thing.
MAGATs like to think they're a Stallone or Schwartzenegger movie character. |

but it's because they were cheap either at thrift stores or surplus stores. Durable, too.

to what you had to pay in retail stores.

14. No connection.
The MAGAS now are the guys who wore crewcuts and had "America-Love it or Leave It" bumper stickers. Long hair on rednecks started in the 80s. Many real hippies are still hippies. One difference is rednecks now smoke pot. In the old days they only drank beer. I was there.

16. I was there in the 60's and 70s and the broad classification of "hippies" were a diverse bunch.
There were those who bought the "peace and love" line and there were others who saw
that group as easy marks to exploit and defraud for financial gain and other considerations. It's not unusual for any large group to settle out into predators and prey. So there is that connection that I see between hippies and trumpers but that's only human nature. Some people just always have to make sure that we can't have nice things. |

18. Nope. As for the trumpers -- the clothing is redneck chic, the long beards are
Duck Dynasty copycat, and the large pickups are rural warrior-wannabe.

closer to hippies than the trump trash they've become.
I'm 61. I wasn't a 60's hippie, but part of the half-generation right behind them. Many I've known since childhood/adolescence were once way better people than the trump trash they've become. All that being said, I have to generally disagree with the OP. |

31. Why, because of the hair? No fucking way. Hippies were some of the coolest looking people ever
Trumpsters are for the most part pretty disgusting looking and that's a fact. As if they don't already act and look like shit to begin with, they enhance their digustingness by growing some of the worst looking beards on the face of the earth, and that includes women trumpsters. That's why they and Trump are so attracted to each other. Looking disgusting is what bands all the trumpsters together.

32. Nope. We rode bikes and our cars fell apart.
We shared with each other and spent a lot of time being “toasted, nicely toasted” (acknowledgement to Cypress Hill).
Music was important. It was the background noise to our generation. |
