The US Navy nuclear-powered guided-missile submarine USS Georgia transited the Strait of Hormuz Monday accompanied by two additional American warships, the Navy said Monday in a rare public announcement of a nuclear submarine's movements.
"The nuclear-power Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Georgia (SSGN 729), along with the guided-missile cruisers USS Port Royal (CG 73) and USS Philippine Sea (CG 58), transited the Strait of Hormuz entering the Arabian Gulf, Dec. 21," the Navy said in a statement using an alternative name for the Persian Gulf.
The vessels' entrance into the area comes amid heightened tensions with Iran, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blaming Iranian backed militias for a rocket attack on the US Embassy compound in Baghdad, on Sunday.
Some US officials have expressed concern that Iran may use the anniversary of the killing of General Qasem Solemani to carry out a strike on the US.

(9,898 posts)There is absolutely no need strategic need for an attack sub, or any sub for that matter to enter the Gulf.
The missiles it carries have stand off ranges far beyond what could be reached in Iran from the relative safety of the Indian Ocean, or the Mediterranean Sea. If he gets sailors killed, he likely assumes it will make disengagement more difficult without proper revenge.
what other missiles are you talking about? they don't have enough range.

(9,898 posts)They have a minimum est. 1,500 mile range, another words, a sub a mile off Chicago could easily hit the bowl of any particular fountain on Miamis Ocean Drive without challenging its capabilities.

(8,755 posts)the Strait of Hormuz?
Could not any function except intimidation / for show be completed without taking the risk of being cornered or otherwise an attempt of containment?
Looks to me an unnecessary act of provocation.

(15,325 posts)Thus shutting major shipping path to ME Oil.
ME oil nations have built their own pipelins re-routing some flow of oil away from the Strait, but it is minimul.
ME oil shipping is fked if Iran chose to close off the Strait & be certain that war would ensue.
If Iran ever makes good on its past threats to close the Strait, I believe it is wartime.
The Strait of Hormuz has always been used as both a threat & a wedge
Basically what's at stake in the Strait.

(4,737 posts)Back when naval gunnery was having it's last gasps after WWII there were plans to convert/build new battleships as "missile carriers", but they were just too big and easy targets. 60 years later we finally got the idea to work, and it's not a bad one IMO
