1. You mean he's not dead yet?

I hope he waits until after the inauguration. Otherwise Trump will declare a national day of mourning.

2. Fine with me the blue states make all the money

Red states would freak without their military spending and the power they hold over us. They will never vote to secede because they get more now.

And mostly because each state has at least 40% of the other side living in it.

We existed fairly well before the advent of hate radio.

19. Ronald Reagan gave rise to right wing radio radicalism

There used to be a thing called the Fairness Doctrine where if a person or organization was attacked on the air then the network was required to provide free equal time to the person attacked to defend themselves. The opposition was careful to check the validity of their statements before airing their opinions to avoid having to provide equal time. When that doctrine was done away with, the right wing was free to slander anyone and anything without fear if any retribution. And the wealthy, flush with cash from Reagan's massive tax cuts, were eager to fund right wing talk radio syndicates nationwide and the brainwashing of America went full throttle.

32. The Fairness Doctrine was important, but not the key to what we have today.

The Fairness Doctrine was a provision within the Broadcast licensing rules which said that in the public interest, stations using bandwidth controlled by the FCC, had to air controversial topics and provide equal time to opposing view points.

Fairness doctrine wasn't about false statements, slander, etc... Those are part of First Amendment arguments. There is a court case (several actually) that held that media was not obligated to report factually accurate information. I know one lawsuit involved Fox News. Slander and Libel laws still exist, but are notoriously difficult to prosecute.

The Telecom Act of 1996 was, in my opinion, what really created the situation we are in. This was the legislation that opened the floodgates that allowed 6 major media corporations to buy up almost 90% of the media.

There is no doubt that Reagan's administration pushed this situation, but it started back with Nixon. Roger Ailes was Nixon's media consultant and the two, along with Pat Buchanan were pushing for a conservative media system back in the 70's. When Nixon was forced to resign, there was a desire from the ultra conservatives to not have that happen again, and the only way it was going to happen was to leverage the money that wealthy conservatives had to mass market the conservative message.

6. For decades now, I've never seen a bigger bunch of drama queens than

Limbaugh, Hannity, and all of these other right wing media losers, combined with their drooling, dwindling listeners.

Limbaugh is dead wrong on that belief of his that the parasitic right is a "majority". It's a shrinking, dying minority.

8. Heard that & posted how he "lamented" the country's "partisanship" (snort) !

He immediately went on to claim credit for having started the Scorched Earth. No, he was not expressing remorse a la Lee ATWATER. He has never apologized for anything and never will. I've said for years that he single handedly resusitated the wingnuts after they had been discredited after McCARTHY and the John Birchers. GINGRICH was only the face. LIMBO was the power.

oh, I know about him! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

I started listening off & on to him kind of like yelling at the TV. Yelling back at him (in my head) for his Anti President B Clinton, and First Lady Hillary screeds. Also there was very little Liberal talk radio in NYC at that point to listen to. : (
I became a rock radio, and talk radio person from a young age!
I even made a drawing/cartoon about it, I was so angry.

10. The problem with red state secession...

Last edited Thu Dec 10, 2020, 05:41 PM - Edit history (1)

is that there are liberals and progressives living there even if they're the minority. Sure a fair amount of them couldn't afford to move, and maybe they wouldn't want to for various reasons.

Then esp The South where there still many African-Americans living there that I wouldn't want them to suffer- the many who couldn't afford to leave be pushed back under the thumb of more racism.

It's more true than not that your average liberals and conservatives got along somewhat ok - before Limbaugh, more NYC locally Bob Grant etc started spewing their hatreds.

Although after Goldwater's trouncing the seriously political Republicans esp the conservative ones started to plan their eventual efforts of routing us Democrats, Liberals, esp at first by filling up Local, and State political positions, then going Federal.

🤔 There's got to be articles or if not a book or two on the rise of hate talk radio.

12. Unfortunately, we still couldn't let the south go. This time,

decline into underdeveloped nation status would be guaranteed, thanks both to the inherent incompetence and corruption of far-right governments and to climate change. Even the quickest glance at what's happening in many other nations shows it'd end up run by kleptocrats and other organized crime, and impoverished migrants would be desperately trying to flee to safety in the U.S.

Another possibility would be the rise of a militant leader and repeated invasions of the U.S., and even war with a goal of conquest or destruction, driven by fresh water disputes and other necessities, but also the kind of hate and aggression that fueled secession in the first place.

All in all, by far the best option is to place a peaceful but firm electoral stop to their very real threat and otherwise leave them to their birthright of pursuit of happiness without hurting others.

13. have you ever seen 5 conservatives

work together? It lasts all of a few days before the largest starts telling the others what to do and the others start talking about the largest behind its' back and plotting to get rid of it. (I use "it" instead of gender nouns)

Over a 70 year life I've seen it happen over and over again.

Meanwhile, the liberals are working together to find better ways of doing things.

Go figure.

16. Ironically, advanced technology has pushed us closer to tyranny

On its face, you'd think there would be be a liberating factor to technology. But I think it might be the opposite. Advanced technology has provided a way to quickly spread disinformation. Half-truths, outright lies and absurd conspiracy theories are passed around unchecked all day long. It's impossible to keep up with.

Conservatives have taken the approach that liberals are persecuting them. Essentially there argument is that the quest for equality and freedom by minority groups is an affront to their religious (constitutional) freedom. This argument has been building. It goes like this: Based on my religious beliefs, I think abortion is wrong. Any woman who has an abortion is violating my religious beliefs. Therefore, a state (government) that allows abortion is violating my religious beliefs and is persecuting me.

Now this argument is illogical on several different levels. But you can substitute many different issues for abortion and get the same result. And that is the "new" Christian Conservatives.

Trump may not share their "Christian" values but he does share their feelings of be persecuted. And that is why the two groups love each other.

One last thought: in "Armies of the Night" Norman Mailer argued that advancements in technology push us to tyranny. If you haven't read the book in a while (or ever) pick it up. Mailer can come across as a bore at times but many of hs observations are interesting.

21. Hell yeah! Let the fascist states secede, and good riddance.

What an epic fascist fail that would be for them. The stupidest nation on the planet.

The new United States would have border access to trade from Mexico and Canada, plus port access on both coasts. If the fascists secede, we keep the machinery of federal government, the military, and all world trade partners. We could restructure our nation, make fascism illegal, and create as close to a national utopia as possible.

Let Them Go! Let Them Go! Let Them Go!

26. Much to Putin's delight, eh Rush? Divide and conquer is their plan.

Scott Walker (Teabagger Republican, WI) said that's what he was instructed to do in Wisconsin and it worked. We actually have him saying it to a donor on video. He was told to tear the State apart with divisiveness and hate. AND to hide behind his religion. He still posts Bible verses on FB.

I sure hope we're not really this stupid. But if we are, the red states will suffer big time when the coasts and other well off states say adios MF's.
