'Sonic attacks' suffered by US diplomats likely caused by microwave energy

The mysterious head injuries suffered by US diplomatic staff in China and Cuba that had been described as "sonic attacks" are consistent with the use of directed microwave energy, according to a report published Saturday by the National Academy of Sciences.

"Overall, directed pulsed RF (radio frequency) energy, especially in those with the distinct early manifestations, appears to be the most plausible mechanism in explaining these cases among those that the committee considered," the report said.

While the report does not conclude that the use of directed microwave energy in these instances was done deliberately, it said such action could be used for nefarious purposes.

The report said that it considered chemical exposures, infectious diseases and psychological issues as potential causes or aggravating factors of the injuries, but the overall analysis appeared to show they were not the likely cause.

Russia is one of the few countries that have used microwave technology before, and a theory among investigators was that some rogue Cuban intelligence officials worked with Russia because they were unhappy with the détente between United States and Cuba, a senior administration official said at the time.

there's zero evidence for this "directed energy" hoohah

Do they have a confession? No
Do they have a photo? No
Do they have a detector readout? No
Do they have vivid imaginations? hmmm

Pretty obvious. You seem very defensive of China and Cuba.

25. This isn't skepticism, it's an appeal to ignorance

Directed sound and particle weapons are widely deployed and becoming commonplace, including in some cases by civilian police forces.

That's obviously not proof of anything in this particular case, but trying to dismiss the theory as "aliens and rayguns" makes you look foolish to a scientifically literate audience.

You said it yourself - no proof of ray guns in this case. The only proof we have is inside the bottles of diplomatic rum that they may have been guzzling.

No photos
No confession
No sensor readouts
No scorched curtains
Nothing but wild tin foiley appeals to sci fi fantasy

Trump had one of the test vehicles brought into DC during the protests. Whether this type of weapon was used on our personnel is yet to be determined but we do know that our side has been working on this sort of thing as well.

11. Pretty weak soup IMO:

Microwaves are easily detected - why weren't they?

Why lean on that explanation in the absence of direct evidence?

IIRC, some of those apparently suffering from this "attack" had repeat attacks after they had left the embassies and returned home to their own countries.

AFAIK, microwave energy causes only a local heating effect (in the old days of the cold war folks would deliberately stand in front of missile detection radar antennae to warm up in cold weather).

24. "why weren't they?"

I'd guess because you would need detectors functioning at the time of the attack, and since no one was expecting a sneak microwave attack, there weren't any detectors to detect anything.

"causes only a local heating effect"

I have no idea what the investigators have in mind, but I'd assume they're talking about about a high-energy, directed emitter, akin to a microwave laser, the idea being that one or a series of short pulsed attacks would cause some kind of cumulative neural injury. Like most other EMR-induced injuries, the symptoms would emerge post-exposure and might become chronic like other forms of brain injury.

Obviously this is all speculative, but we now live in an age where directed sound and particle weapons are widely deployed, so it's not really a tinfoil conspiracy.

Conflating my personal speculation about the source of the radiation with the scientifically-justified findings in the report is exceedingly clumsy.

Try again.

40. IIRC they had ample opportunity to detect microwave or ultrasound,

they did so and found nothing. These "attacks" were not a one-off, happened a few times but never again kind of thing. That's why this is speculative (as you rightfully point out) - they can't think of anything else that may have caused the reported effects.

And why did it apparently show up again when the diplomats had returned home? The Ruskies were following them around with their ray-guns?

Sorry for the sarcasm but the case has not been made at all here.
