Have a Souper Thanksgiving

We aren't a big family. but we are going to miss getting together this year. So I decided to cook up a big batch of my dear late mother's chicken escarole soup and bring containers around to leave on the doorstep of family members we can't be with this year. I put a zoom invite for a Souper Thanksgiving with the container asking them to call in at a certain time so we could have soup together. To my surprise, everyone jumped on board. Before long a salad platter and a pumpkin pie arrived on my doorstep from two of my relatives. Now we're going to share soup salad and dessert via zoom. we're setting up a tablet at the head of the table and can't wait to celebrate in this very different way.

Anyway, just an idea. Thought I'd share it.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

My virtual Thanksgiving is shaping up very nicely.

Haven’t found a pie on my doorstep yet, but there’s still time.

Was your mother Italian? Chicken and escarole soup was a regular thing when I was growing up (Italian on bother sides).

My dad was all Italian -- from Naples and Perugia.

My mom was half Irish and half Sicilian -- what a combo!

Do you eat 7 fish on Christmas Eve? That's another family tradition

Christmas was my favorite holiday in large measure because of that. As they passed and as we became the older generation it has been harder to do that. We don't have enough people at the Christas Eve table to eat all seven dishes. We tried reducing things to five fish, then three fish. The last few years I finally hit on a solution. We spread the holiday out and have different dinner guests over the course of seven days with one fish dish each meal. We have also done two fish a day over four days (one day with only one fish). Not the same, for sure, but still a fun way and our new tradition.

Families that love one another and care for each others well being should be doing the same.

Happy Thanksgiving one and all.

I happen to have no family within 600 miles, and I love seeing stories like this.

I am personally going to be very happy to cook a full turkey dinner for one, and have lots of meals with the leftovers.
