Bezos Gives $10 Billion to Environmental Projects From His Newly Created Earth Fund

I'd like to think this announcement was deliberately timed to coincide with Biden's election.

From Slashdot on FB:

Jeff Bezos has named 16 environmental organizations that will get the first chunk of his $10 billion fund for climate action. From a report:

Collectively, they'll get $791 million from the richest man on Earth, although Bezos did not specify how much would go to each group. "I've spent the past several months learning from a group of incredibly smart people who've made it their life's work to fight climate change and its impact on communities around the world," Bezos said. "I'm inspired by what they're doing, and excited to help them scale."

The Amazon CEO announced the creation of his personal $10 billion Bezos Earth Fund in February. His fund is equivalent to more than 7 percent of his net worth. It's also 10 times as much as philanthropic foundations gave globally in 2018 to efforts to slow climate change. For his first round of funding, Bezos chose to back a handful of legacy organizations with an established history of advocacy on behalf of the planet. His choice in recipients so far signals support for mainstream environmental groups rallying for new policies and research on climate change.

The full list of grantees are a mix of big name NGOs, labs, reforestation and climate justice groups. They include: The Climate and Clean Energy Equity Fund, ClimateWorks Foundation, Dream Corps Green For All, Eden Reforestation Projects, Energy Foundation, Environmental Defense Fund, The Hive Fund for Climate and Gender Justice, Natural Resources Defense Council, The Nature Conservancy, NDN Collective, Rocky Mountain Institute, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, The Solutions Project, Union of Concerned Scientists, World Resources Institute and World Wildlife Fund.

2. My sentiments exactly!

Notice that the recipients are longstanding, tried-and-true track record NGO's. As long as their projects get scaled up with his money, it's not wasted.

3. Why are we the only ones to comment on this tremendous news?

Kinda saddened by this ...

4. Lots of other things to worry about right now

I suspect climate interest will go back up after we get past COVID. It's hard to worry about long term issues like the climate when there's a pandemic going around and a lot of people are hurting financially.

7. I just posted it. I'm into seeing the better world that's possible.

Don't be. You're not in small company around here.

I like to think we're attending to a bunch of good things that lead to a bigger vision.
Mine is climate crises and environmentalism.

This guy's philanthropy will work together with Green New Deal projects, and who knows how the work will coalesce into reviving a world that beats off Big Fossil's damage.

This kind of stuff fires up my spirits and hopes. I can tell yours, too.

10. If someone asked me in what sense am I the MOST liberal ...

Without hesitation I would answer 'it's regarding the environment, in particular protecting the animals we share the planet with'.

I mean I'm pretty liberal in pretty much every sense (though I'm definitely not Mr. PC) but that is the most important 'cause' to me.

Speaking of that ... where the hell has Coventina been? Don't think I've seen her since 11/3 ... and I been here constantly.

12. It's why I was all in, slingin' posts left and right for Gov Jay Inslee back in the primaries.

Humans working outdoors is one way to get out of our pitiable feelings over this pandemic and crap politics. Anywhere on Earth where people need jobs, these projects might offer good, meaningful work.

So I'm shifting gears toward any hopeful new improvements I find because I'm sick and tired of old school conflict driven politics.

(Last I saw was her May journal entry?)

6. I look at all of the money to these groups and without control of the senate, no major changes.

.

If Bezos and the other large donors were serious, they'd fight to get rid of Mitch McConnell's corrosive GOP control.

Mitch says he's going to fight Biden on everything, and that will include major climate initiatives.

9. I hear you.

Which means Big Donors of Democrats had better succeed in GA.

Andrew Yang's down there, too, along with party money and 600,000 new registrants for Jan 5.

Keep your hopes up, TBA.

11. Well, it depends on how they're using their money, doesn't it.

Admittedly, it has pissed me off that the richest guy on the planet has a paywall for his WaPo, but this kinda makes up for that.
