This is a special "Independent Lens" presentation inspired by the book of the same name by Nicholas Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn:
Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide was filmed in 10 countries and follows Kristof, WuDunn, and celebrity activists America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union, and Olivia Wilde on a journey to tell the stories of inspiring, courageous individuals. Across the globe oppression is being confronted, and real meaningful solutions are being fashioned through health care, education, and economic empowerment for women and girls. The linked problems of sex trafficking and forced prostitution, gender-based violence, and maternal mortality which needlessly claim one woman every 90 seconds present to us the single most vital opportunity of our time: the opportunity to make a change. All over the world women are seizing this opportunity.
Times an other details are on the "Independent Lens" web site. If you miss it, they will be posting it online tomorrow:

Most of the women are mothers of multiple kids with no husbands, and some have been prostitutes. They learn to to cut hair and set up mini salons to earn money.

(3,818 posts)just disappeared. I swung from crying to cheering. It is inspiring to watch these women, who have been in the exact same situations, reach out to other girls and women and create a community. Cambodia really struck me. The love that is poured into these girls and the love the girls show each other. Highly recommend watching this show and I will definitely be watching the 2nd half tomorrow. Astounding.

I watched the 2nd episode last night. It was difficult to watch, but just think of the help these girls and women can get if everyone knows of their plight.
