Dan Rather @DanRatherI'm excited. 18 presidential election nights "On Air." (72 years. Maybe a record?) From a small radio station in rural Huntsville to here with all of you. The mind turns. Will this be my last? I hope not, but know it could be. It will be memorable. Thank you all for joining me.

(5,292 posts)I too wonder if this will be my last election. I know I don't have too many left. The older one gets, the fewer elections are left to vote in. I have a good feeling this one will be the best one.

(34,095 posts)broadcasters that I remember, he and Walter Cronkite and Bill Kurtis who was local. I am so happy and feel so lucky that we still have Dan.

(25,952 posts)He was eyes on the scene for Walter Cronkite, if I remember correctly. Not a good night for the country.

(25,816 posts)1948 was 72 years ago. The year I was born.
I was formerly a ticket agent at National Airport in Washington, DC. One evening, to my delighted surprise, Dan Rather came to my check in position to purchase a ticket to Philadelphia. He was sweet and funny, and while aware of his, not sure what to say but I'll say his celebrity, was not at all full of himself. We had a brief discussion about whether he should purchase a round trip ticket right then as he was not certain exactly when he'd be returning, but with my advice (pat on the back here Poindexter) he did.
He was absolutely one of the famous/celebrity good guys.

(3,400 posts)Still firmly believe Dan Rather was set up by the Republican Ratfuckers...leading to his premature departure fro CBS.

(6,908 posts)I always thought of him as a kind of a Cronkite-lite. But that was mainly because he was a CBS contemporary and always second place in the minds of viewers. When Cronkite left, Rather tried to take over as Americas news anchor, but didnt have the gravity and resume yet to fill Walters shoes. Rather even had a corny sign-off in the 1980s when recession was closing plants and factories under oil price spikes and embargoes. Hed say courage. It seemed kinda lame, but I was a rebel, a loner, Dottie.
Bit over the decades his strength is his stability. And in 2020, stability is at a premium in old people. How many so-called institutions in politics like Graham, McConnell, Trump, Pence, turn out to be hypocrites? None of them have been consistent and/or stable.
Advantage Dan. Hes a national treasure at the exact time we need it.

(25,952 posts)At first he stood to deliver the news rather than sitting behind a desk, and wore sweaters. It was strange at the time, but looking back, it's interesting how he was trying to find his way. I say good for him. He's had a great career overall.
You make a good point that over time he has found stability, and I think he also found the gravitas that eluded him during his earlier career when he wanted it so badly and was just too green. Again - good for him, and for us. We are lucky to have him still.

(30,717 posts)He was a teenager at the time. He had heard me recount my remembrances of the day of the assassination a few times.
The documentary was about the JFK assassination. It blew him away to hear Rather's voice.

(11,559 posts)I wonder what it was like for him in Huntsville all those years ago. Maybe he didn't hoist his liberal flag that high in those days, just out of self-preservation.

(2,311 posts)If he's covered 18 presidential elections, that's a span of 68 years, not 72. 1952 through 2020 encompasses 18 elections, but only 68 years.
