1. Those people ...
... don't believe they're in any danger.
Their "pResident" told them it's a hoax, it will go away by itself, there will be a cure available in a few weeks - and Jesus will protect them in the meantime. |

But they carried it home where family, neighbors, friends and others got it. And then they carried it to their family, friends, neighbors etc. On and on.
This is a death cult mass insanity event. Lock them up! |

If they don't care about living any longer, that's one thing, but their willingness to make others sick is incomprehensible.

7. We're at the stage in this pandemic
Where much of the responsibility for keeping ourselves safe is in our own hands.
We know the science; masks work, distancing works. If by now these folk chose to discard this scientific knowledge, I find it difficult to have sympathy for any consequences they may suffer. The same sentiment goes for their friends and family. The knowledge is out there. Only the willfully ignorant decide not to follow advice. |

My theory is that actual retirees knew to stay home.

15. Yes! But don't you see photos of that crowd and think they're younger than you? I do,
and granted, I've no idea what you look like, but if The Villages takes people younger than age 55, I guess I could see them in that crowd.
So age 55 is just a Villages guideline, I guess. The one I live in won't even let inheritors of their parents' homes live in them until they're 55, just visit (or rent them out). |

29. In my 55+ community, one has to be of age to *own* property.
But, younger family members can live here. We have many. Otherwise, this place would just be "God's waiting room."
Also, I'm sure some of the younger ones are not actually from The Villages, but live nearby. They come for the show. >> I've no idea what you look like, Obviously, you think my avatar is some handsome and famous person. (It's me.) ![]() |

Can't really tell anything from the pic in the OP.
Here's a link to a thread about the Pence rally there on Oct. 10th. Plenty of old people there, so devoted that they were out in the sun in the heat of the day, in 90 degree temps and high humidity, in a parking lot. Some got overheated or dehydrated and needed medical attention. https://www.democraticunderground.com/100214264359 |

It's a very conservative place. I've heard it referred to by a resident as the Viagra capital of the world.

but they are still very much in the minority. About 70% of the residents voted for Trump in 2016. He may have lost some support there, but I doubt he'll get less than 65% of their votes this year.

They love to ride their golf carts. It's a big thing at the communities where people can afford the nice ones.
They compete for who has the fanciest cart. There are special lanes for the carts in the streets. I'm sure they had some super-spreader buses too -- for the five blocks. ![]() |

20. Several years ago
We moved to The Villages. Hubby 56 me 54. Lasted six months before leaving. So many old farts that we felt intimidated. But they do encourage lots of physical activities, so the demographic may have changed. Still soooo glad we left! There's an almost manic effort to deny aging. Just a weird place.

36. ...
Sounds like it. I've learned that most oldsters ( 65+ ) just don't let go of younger activities, and so the denial, past time that one could recognize one's limitations. It's one thing to 'act' old, and another to actually be more fragile than one is willing to admit.
We'll find out in two weeks, I guess. |

21. It gives their lives meaning!
The Cult of Trump gives their lives meaning. This gives them the illusion that they are part of something greater than themselves. It is a wonderful big show and community for them.
They have already uprooted themselves from where they lived in a more active phase of life. Trump's tweets to them gives them a feeling of belonging.......an unfulfilled need for too many Americans who are rootless. It fits with the angry, selfish and entitled feelings they hold dear. |

26. Odds are that their kids and grandkids are a long ways away - see them only occasionally
It's the American ethos of the nuclear family, with close blood ties only between parents and their young children.
Often the kids go off to another state for college and never return, in which case the parents can relocate without that consideration. Sometimes the parents just decide to move to another state. There is a whole industry built up around relocating in retirement. Note that economists think the nuclear family is a good idea, since people can more easily move to where there are jobs, rather than sticking around in places where they have extended families. |
