Look, I understand the transactional nature of the relationship between Christian evangelicals with Trump. They contend that they have a lot to gain from him, by swearing their allegiance to him. Trump has delivered by packing the nation's courts(including the Supreme court) with judges that are more likely to align with their religous stances on a variety of issues including abortion and gay rights. They believe that their religous freedoms are under serious attack(see their paranaioa over the attack on Christmas) and Trump is the "chosen one", the modern day King Cyrus, sent by God to protect them from real and perceived attacks. Plus he has been "loyal" to Israel, symbolized by his contentious decision to move the American embassy to Jerusalem. If you vote for Trump, you are not voting for the man, you are voting for the conservative(dare I say Christian) political agenda. So, they claim.
But I am still in awe of this blatant hypocrisy! After decades of demanding a Christian morality test on every president elected prior to Trump, they have conveniently decided to turn a blind eye to his UNREPENTANT lying, racism, adultery and corruption. They always find an excuse for his total lack of empathy, humility and common decency. Some have even justified his actions by saying they like a president who "fights back" in reference to his boorish attacks on the vulnerable, women, the disabled, minorities, the military and even those who are no longer with us(eg. John McCain).
Their argument is 'King David also had is his faults. We are all imperfect. Who are we to judge?' Conveniently overlooking the fact that the only reason that the likes of King David carried any favor with God was that they humbled themselves and repented for their mistakes. Repentence and humility as we all know are both qualities Trump has a strong aversion to. One also wonders why there wasn't this rush to overlook human failings of a Bill Clinton for example. I guess it is forgive and ignore when it suits my agenda, but vilify and raise hell when it doesn't.
For all they have gained under the Trump era, I sincerely believe that this is a case of winning the battle and losing the war. The ultimate aim of the Christian church, is to spread the gospel and win over "lost souls". By unabashedly defending a man, who views just about every one of Jesus Christ's' ideals with utter disdain, even at times mocking them behind closed doors, evangelicals have made that goal all that much harder to achieve. They have made their bed with the devil, and it will take a long, long time to wash off this stain of moral hypocrisy.

(6,496 posts)Oh, that's funny coming from Christians. There's nothing they love more than to judge other people and act all sanctimonious.

(8,019 posts)fed. They're as delusional as trump is. They're no different than him. And until some group finally starts taking on this bunch, it's going to continue to be this way.
Those people aren't "Christians". They're delusional mental cases.

(14,854 posts)Their more reasonable co-religionists don't seem to be inclined to say much against them - except to claim, like you did, that they aren't Christians. That's very convenient and all, but who should "take them on" if Christians won't do it?
The reality is that opposition to Trump is the minority position among Christians in the US. Trump got most of the Christians' votes in 2016, and their support for him hasn't waned very much since then. It's entirely possible the majority will vote for him again in 2020.

(518 posts)It was never about Jesus or Christianity. It was always about racism and patriarchy, ie power.
Always. Southern Baptists exist because the Baptist church turned against slavery and the Southern Baptists created their own church.
I lived in Aladamnbama (name stolen from Juanita Jean) amongst the Southern evangelicals. It was an experience. The entire anti-abortion thing started, literally, because it just didn't sound good to say, I don't want my little white children going to school with ****. It sounded so much better to say, " pro life," and after all, women are completely expendable and should know their place.
As a person who tries (and fails) to live by the teachings of Jesus, I've been horrified, watching what they're doing to my faith and my God. (Not my brand of Christian, so not exactly my faith, but they do, imo, smear the name of Christ. ) But the whole scam was never about faith, or God . It was always about racism, sexism, and raw power. White patriarchy, when Jesus wasn't even white.
Yeah, I'm bitter.

(89 posts)Perfect illustration of that is the almost deafening silence on the murder of George Floyd. I wish they valued black lives as much as they do that of the unborn child. Or that they fought as much against the NRA and gun control as they did for abortion rights. It has never been about the Christian ideal, it's always been about maintaining an oppressive status quo.
