I like Ron Reagan. He's a liberal Dem, but I guess he has blind spots about his father (as most of us probably have regarding our own kin).
His father, Ronald Reagan, was an amiable imbecile who badly damaged America and Americans with his tax cuts, his foreign policy, his wingnut ideology, and by totally ignoring the pandemic that was taking place during his tenure. That pandemic was called AIDs and his indifference made him responsible for far more deaths than Trump.
And you can add that he was a major factor in making a pResident Donald Trump possible.
Even when Republicans aren't mean-spirited people, their ideology makes them total pricks who are a menace to humanity. (Sorry for the misogyny in that statement, so pick your own term for Republican women.)
Here's a link to Ron's comments about his father, if you're interested.

(76 posts)when saint ronald turned the government from the side of working people, to a union busting heavy for the well connected, he did the most damage to the USA than any other "leader" in the modern era.
union representation is in the low single digits, and we're all suffering from it's affects.

(6,448 posts)The only difference was Patti Davis and Ron Jr. The jury is still out on Tiffany and Barron.
Reagan planted the anti-government seed that has blossomed into the Boogaloo Boneheads of today: "The most dangerous words you'll hear are 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help you'". (That's my take, anyway.)
There's also Trickle-Down and astronomical budget deficits they have in common.
The only true difference in Trump and Reagan is their feeling toward Russia.

(3,635 posts)He was a conservative, which includes all the ugly tendencies which come with that ideology. But he did:
-raise taxes when needed
-work with Tip O'neill to fund Social Security
-Amnesty for immigrants
-made MLK a national holiday
-believe in science and in funding NASA
-wasn't a gun nut
Also keep in mind, Ron knew a different side of his father, who by all counts he was a decent husband and father.

(15,035 posts)the Contras in Nicaragua who were murdering people to prevent their communist foes from murdering people. Funny how he didn't give a damn about murder, as long as "the right people" were being murdered. So, yeah, he was probably better than today's GOP.
However he did ignore that AIDs thing which was called a "Gay Cancer." But what the hell. Once again, the "right people" were dying.
