The cowards' comeuppance: It's too late for a radical reinvention of the Trump GOP

NY Daily News opinion piece by Charlie Sykes:

https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-oped-the-cowards-comeuppance-20201018-aii26wmixfgbhm74nxuadk4nxi-story.html

-snip-

Its October 2020. Its too late. For better or worse, they are stuck with the die they cast long ago, to let themselves become Trumpian lickspittles. The bill for their Faustian bargain has come due.

-snip-

Few of them, however, matched the fawning servility of Lindsey Graham, who as a candidate for president called Trump a race-baiting, xenophobic bigot and many other accurate descriptors, then reinvented himself into a full-blown MAGA Man, complete with tights and cape. Now, he finds himself facing the possibility of a humiliating electoral defeat.

Its now far too late for Graham to pivot again. One spine is all he had to sacrifice for his country.

-snip-

And after quoting some of Sasse's blunt criticism of Trump:

Id say the torrent of truth is welcome, but this is all the equivalent of changing the recipe for a disgusting cake 10 seconds before its due to go in the oven.

The batter cant be saved. Its going in the oven one way or another. It smells awful. Its going to taste terrible. Republicans are going to have to eat what they have made and then prepare for the gastrointestinal reckoning.

5. What I'm watching for:

To see which individual in the Republican Party will be the new leader should Trump not be re-elected.

Will it be a Trump Wannabe or will it be someone more "traditional" like John McCain? And can you see the latter to MAGAts?

7. Itll be Cotton or Cruz in the Senate, itll be Nunes (or any number of his fellow loons) in the House

R-Money will be the ONLY one to try get them to believe hes some kind of counter-weight, but it wont work. He would have to regulate the holy ghost out of firms like facebook and google (in order to make them more 'fair'); he would need to convince them that hes just as put-upon and nut-kicked by changing and progressing social norms and secularism as they are.

Problem is, the lifetime Vulture Capitalist WONT do A, and the 'Christians' are so freaked out by his magic underwear that he wont get anywhere with B.

6. They are all liars and phonies.

In October 2017, Jeff Flake tried to prick their consciences. Speaking on the floor of the Senate, the Arizonan made a plea for a return to decency.

We must never regard as normal the regular and casual undermining of our democratic norms and ideals, he said. We must never meekly accept the daily sundering of our country. The personal attacks, the threats against principles, freedoms and institution, the flagrant disregard for truth and decency.

And then he voted to give Trump everything he wanted.

He voted to kill Obamacare, and he voted for Kavanaugh.
