1. I knew I was heterosexual by the age of six.

I imagine one can become aware of one's sexual orientation or gender just as easily.

I didn't know anything about gender identity or sexual orientation at that age. All I knew is that girls were different from boys, and I liked the differences.

Why should it be different for any other kid?

2. The mistake people make is equating gender with sexuality.

Yes, there are children who outwardly have the genitalia of one gender but insist they are another. There are other iterations of gender as well that include chromosomal differences, hermaphroditism, and Iím sure others. And thatís just the physical complexities.

Itís a challenge for parents for sure, not so much because of the child but because of others who canít wrap their heads or morals around what diverse creatures we are.

Puberty reveals and changes how everyone sees themselves, but at eight itís remarkably matter of fact usually.

5. Kids know how they like to dress, what toys they prefer early on.

6. Was a Head Start monitor many years ago.

Monitoring one of our centers at nap time. Most of the kids were resting. One little boy was awake. Wearing a dress and pretending to iron clothes. The teacher told me that was just natural for him. They were very accepting. He was no more than 5 yrs old.

Itís in your brain/body. You know without even understanding at an early age.

7. It varies a lot.

My high school sweetheart knew around that age (and kept it hidden until her 50s). The child of a friend of ours knew around age 5. The interesting thing about that child is that even religious fundamentalists were relieved to learn they did not have to struggle with gender any more, since the child had a very male feel since perhaps age 2.

8. When I was in elementary school, I knew who the Gay boys were.

Even though those boys hung out with straight boys like me to fit in, I could see that their reactions to a lot of events that boys experience was different from mine. I believe that people are BORN LGBTQ, and if people were true believers in a higher power, they would accept that higher power made those people what they are.
