Virginia has turned blue but I live in deep red suburb. It isn't ultra rich but certainly not poor. I have never had to wait longer than 20 minutes.
Not on election day in the morning shortly after the polls opened. Not once when I got off late from work at went at the worst possible time (right around 6pm). Not the one time I was able to vote early in person (prior to 2020 you needed a reason). Our polling location has huge banks of voting tables and a large staff like 8 checking people in. That keeps the line moving ahead one person every 5-10 seconds. If someone has an issue, they go to a separate staff to it doesn't hold up the process. There are even two counting machines at the precinct so no bottleneck there even though one would be more than enough. It isn't rocket science to ensure nobody has to wait longer than 30 minutes to vote.
This isn't accidental. It is engineered that way. Most people will still vote even if it takes them hours but elections are won or lost on the margin. Will 5% of the people not vote due to long times? What about 1%? Make the lines long in blue precincts and short in red ones.

(6,699 posts)I fought in Vietnam, thinking I was doing it for my country. These strong souls are doing every bit as much, and probably more for the future of their country.
The repuKKKe treasonous bastards are every bit as much the enemy as we have ever faced, "enemies from within".
A sad day in America. Let's hope for real change in every level of our government. Everyone of these GOPutin thugs and enablers need to be routed out of our government...and more in 2022 and 2024 when those days come.

(8,716 posts)As a Vietnam era vet like you, the draft took us, like it or not, at 18. 50+ thousand died. How many are still with us damaged, and broken, and had no choice and no vote. We did NOT have the right to vote. So these assholes denying vote now, fuck you to a hell worse that Vietnam even came close to.

(14,642 posts)Why is this not important to everyone? I can't believe the number of people I know who don't see how important voting is. I always tell them if they don't vote, they can't complain.

(18,625 posts)This problem has only exploded since SCOTUS eliminated the previous laws.
Before that I didn't hear very much about voter suppression.
Boy we need those laws back.

(189 posts)I was planning on early voting today. Its in a heavily red county and we only have early voting at 1 location for over 300,000 . They just announced that 3 board of election employees tested positive at this location this morning and are in a 14 day quarantine. They said that early voters werent in contact with these employees but the employees that tested positive were in contact with people that were. Voting will continue till further notice.

(1,606 posts)Folks--all the celebratory and congratulatory sentiments are well meaning and well deserved. But they MISS THE POINT.
The point is: (1) People should NOT have to stand in line for hours to vote. (2) We KNOW that reducing the number of polling places (and locating them in inconvenient places) is a central strategy in voter suppression. (3) Making people stand in line for HOURS (often in inclement weather) smothers our democracy.
THEY know that, and WE know that. Each election cycle it's the same ol' playbook: they suppress, and we piss and moan.
So here we are...again..,and what are WE doing about it (e.g., Democratic Party operatives who recognize and can make this shit stop right NOW--please heed this question)???
So sad to see this story playing out over and over and over across DECADES. It's high time that our state party affiliates connect with, energize, and activate our local electoral apparatus.

(14,570 posts)these days I get so emotional about stuff like this.
She said it is because Trump is trying to flush our democracy down his gold toilet.
We have both filled out our ballots and I'm taking them up to the lock box to drop off right after this post. Because, like this person telling the story, wild horses could not stop us from voting.

I don't thing I posses the endurance or strength to persevere as they have.
Bless them.
