(Bloomberg) -- Democrats attacked the Supreme Court nomination of Amy Coney Barrett as a move to kill the Affordable Care Act in the midst of a pandemic and sharply shift the court to the right at a Senate hearing thats all but certain to lead to her confirmation just days before the election.
Beginning four days of statements and questioning, members of the Senate Judiciary Committee clashed over the propriety of President Donald Trumps nomination of Barrett just 38 days before Election Day and the impact she would have on a court that would have a 6-3 conservative majority.
President Trump and Senate Republicans see the potential to wildly swing the balance of the court, Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont said. They see the ability to take the courts from being independent to making them instead an arm of the far right and the Republican Party.
Republicans called Barrett a worthy successor to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the liberal icon whose Sept. 18 death set off a historic pre-election battle over the future of the nations highest court. Republicans see a chance to cement a conservative majority for decades, even if the process carries political risks for the Nov. 3 election.

(11,268 posts)They keep saying it will end ACA coverage but fail to mention in doing that people who had their healthcare through work but lose their jobs will also lose their chance of coverage through the ACA.
Everyone will be affected, those currently benefitting from the coverage and those who may need it.

(3,166 posts)The ACA does more than just trying to offer coverage. There are provisions in the law that govern ALL health insurance policies - not just policies purchased on the exchanges. The ACA mandates that no one can be denied by ANY insurer because of a pre-existing condition. Young adults can stay on their parents policies, no matter where those policies comes from. The ACA also bans lifetime caps on coverage and sets out-of-pocket maximums for all policies. If its declared unconstitutional, ALL of that goes away. The entire healthcare system would be decimated, since those things have been law since 2014, the year that the ACA really kicked in.
