Only during these crazy times could Aria DiMezzo win.

I don't think anyone even knows how she got nominated to the republican ticket. It just shows how partisan people are that they blindly chose her because she put an R by her name. We do live in crazy days though, so I anticipate a new sheriff in town.

With more than 4,200 votes, Republicans in one New Hampshire county nominated an unconventional candidate for sheriff: a self-described satanist whose campaign slogan disparages the police.

Since then, Aria DiMezzo, a transgender woman in her early 30s, has become a minor celebrity — and the target of online attacks, vandalism including a homophobic slur spray-painted on her car, and a write-in campaign to weaken her chances.

DiMezzo — the lone Republican candidate for Cheshire County sheriff in September’s primary — believes most voters blindly checked the box next to her name. She only registered as a Republican at the last second, after concluding her bid to get on the ballot as a Libertarian — her preferred party — would have required gathering signatures amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Anyone who takes a look at me knows pretty much right off the bat that I’m clearly not a Republican,” said DiMezzo, who stands over 6 feet tall, sports fire-engine red hair and has tattoos on both arms, including one for the Greek letter “pi” and the word “coexist.”

She’s looking to unseat Eli Rivera, a Democrat who has held the job in the county of more than 76,000 since 2012.

If her deputies don’t want to police the police, she said they can either quit or sit in the office and play video games.

“If the police were these fine upstanding honorable people just investigating crimes where there are victims and were serving and protecting people, I wouldn’t have an issue with that. But that is not what they are doing,” said DiMezzo, whose campaign signs include the phrase “F—- The Police” and the symbol for anarchy emblazoned over a sheriff’s badge standing in for the “A” in “Aria.”

DiMezzo said, as law enforcement, any of her own of her deputies “would be fired on the spot, and perhaps charged with crimes, for any brutality or misconduct.”

My first job when I moved to NH, when I was 19 years old, was at a long-defunct computer magazine running out of an office a block from there.

And you're right, Keene is the county seat for Cheshire County. I think Milford is in Hillsborough now that you mention it I now recall.

It's been decades. I lived in Hillsborough County when I was in my teens.

Some of her signs sport the tag line, defund the police.

Eli Rivera has been sheriff for almost ten years and is likely to be re-elected. Earl Nelson, who has run against Rivera and who I think was sheriff at one point, has a write-in campaign going, which will probably benefit Rivera. Which I suspect will be fine with Nelson and the sheriffs department.

Remember. Keene also gave us white supremacist snd convicted felon Christopher Cantwell. Cheshire county is a seriously dem-leaning county, though we clearly have our share of RWNJs.

And I forgot about the top of the mall in Keene, which makes more sense. Other than that, I haven't been following the political scene there for a very long time.

Law enforcement in this area is okay. They have a pretty good sense of the communities they serve and play by the rules. Perfect? Probably not. But the situation here doesn’t warrant disruption for the sake of disruption.

DiMezzo reminds me of high school, about 100 years ago, where we had kids running for student council whose platform was to disband student council. Plus, she has no law enforcement experience. Maybe that’s fine, to a point, but there’s a sense of antagonism that is wholly unwarranted.

All of our candidates put R's behind their names. That will really fuck up the repug mind.

Once in office, they can govern as a Democrat.
